Dominates in Doubleheader Sweep
Owls post 12-2 victory in game one, record
12-3 win in nightcap
NEW HAVEN, CONN. (May 1, 2002)
- The Franklin Pierce University
softball team closed out the
Northeast-10 Conference regular season with a 12-2 loss
in game one and a 12-3 loss in game two to Southern Connecticut
State University in League doubleheader action at Pelz Field
this afternoon.
Sophomore Jill Yakushewich hit a
perfect three-for-three, including a homerun, with three
RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Mindi Scala went 2-2 with
a homerun, two runs scored and an RBI. Alexis Rossi hit
3-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.
Brooke Remington (Bennington,
Vt./Mount Anthony) led the FP
offense hitting 1-2
with two RBIs.
FP
jumped out to the early two-run
lead as Remington hit a two-run double to give the Ravens
the two run advantage.
Southern Connecticut erupted for
eight runs in the bottom of the frame to take immediate
control of the game. With bases loaded, Myers smacked a
grand slam to give the Owls the four run lead. Kate Valade
and Yakushewich both pounded RBI doubles and Rossi drove
in a two-run double to help SCSU take a commanding eight
run lead by the end of one.
The Owls tacked on four more runs
by the end of the third to make the final, SCSU 12, FP
2.
Southern Connecticut's Samantha Byrne
allowed just one hit, struck out five and walked one in
five innings of work for the win. Kalene Wotton (Westminster,
Mass./Oakmont) suffered the loss as she allowed
11 earned runs on 10 hits, struck out one and walked one
in 1.1 innings of work.

completed the sweep of FP
with a 12-3 victory in game two
of the doubleheader. Myer had another outstanding performance
at the plate, as she went 3-3, including her second homerun
of the afternoon, with two runs scored and four RBIs. Maureen
Hoag also hit 3-3 and scored two runs, while Valade batted
2-3 with a homerun.
FP
opened up the
scoring in the top of the first, as junior Carolyn
Hall (Whitman, Mass./Whitman Hanson) was walked
and later scored on an error by shortstop.
Later in the inning,
Michelle Derochers (Billerica, Mass./Billerica)
knocked in Remington to put the Ravens up by two.
The Owls answered
later in the first, as Myers tripled and drove in Janelle
Kern to cut FPC's lead in half.
SCSU then took over
in the second inning and added eight consecutive runs to
put game two out of reach.
Hoag earned her tenth
win of the season, as she allowed three earned runs on five
hits, struck out two and walked two in five innings of work.
Freshman Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln)
allowed ten earned runs on 11 hits, struck out one and walked
one in four innings of work for the loss.
