FT. MYERS, FLA. (March 20, 2002)
- The Franklin Pierce University
softball team recorded
a 13-1 win over UMass Boston and fell to Grinnell College
2-0 in non-conference action at the 2002 Gene Cusic Classic
this afternoon.
In the first game of the doubleheader,
UMass Boston drew first blood, as an RBI single in the top
of the first put the Beacons up 1-0.
FPC, however, dominated in the bottom
of the first, scoring six straight runs. Junior Julie
Haight (Fort Montgomery, N.Y./O'Neill) knocked in
teammates Sonja Johnson (Ashby, Mass./North Middlesex
Regional) and Michelle Derochers (Billerica,
Mass./Billerica) to take over a one run lead.
Freshman Amy Torla (Haverhill,
Mass./Haverhill) also knocked in two runs later
in the inning, scoring Haight and Kayla Desjardins
(Plainfield, Conn./Plainfield) to make the score
4-1. The inning was capped off by RBI singles by Brooke
McGovern (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) and
Carolyn Hall (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) to
give FP
a 6-1 lead heading into the second.
The Ravens put away the Beacons for
good when Hall led off the third inning with a solo homerun
over the rightfield fence.
Hall finished the afternoon hitting
2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Johnson batted 3-for-4
with three runs and an RBI. Haight went 2-for-3 with two
runs and two RBIs.
Torla picked up the win as she allowed
just one earned run on two hits, struck out seven and walked
none in five innings of work. UMass Boston's Andrea Spinale
allowed nine earned runs on 14 hits, struck out two and
walked none in the loss.

FP
was shutout 2-0
by Grinnell College in its second matchup of the day.
After six innings
of scoreless softball, the Ravens tried to pull of the win
with a controversial play at homeplate.
Freshman Mary
Reade (Groveland, Mass./Pentuckett Reg.) led off
the seventh with a single, stole second base and advanced
to third on a throwing error. With two outs, Jessica
Heaney (Greenport, N.Y./Greenport) stepped up to
the plate and was thrown a wild pitch. Reade attempted to
get Ravens on the board by stealing home, but was tagged
out on a close play to send the teams into extra innings.
Janelle Raborn was
driven in by teammate Acrivi Coromelas, who was later singled
in by Dinah Zebot to give Grinnell the two run advantage.
FP
led off the eighth
with Brooke Remington (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony)
on second, who stole third on a wild pitch.
With two outs and
Hall up at bat, Remington attempted to steal home on a wild
pitch, but was tagged out to end the game.
Grinnell starter,
Kate Reynolds allowed three hits, struck out seven batters
and walked none. Megan Beaman allowed no runs on two hits,
struck out two and walked none in two innings of relief
for the win. Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln)
was the hardluck loser as she surrendered just one
earned run on seven hits, struck out seven and walked none.
