Drops a Pair
to NYIT
Ravens fall 1-0 in both games of the
non-conference doubleheader
RINDGE, N.H. (April 21, 2002)
- The Franklin Pierce University
softball team dropped a pair
of 1-0 losses to New York Institute of Technology in non-conference
action at the FP
Softball Field this afternoon.
NYIT's Marianna Higens led the Bears
hitting two-for-four with an RBI. Jamie Van Dusen went 2-3,
while Renee Allen added a run scored.
The teams were scoreless through
eight innings until Allen singled and advanced to first
on an error by shortstop, stole second and was later driven
in by Higens to clinch the 1-0 win.
NYIT hurler, Tehmeena Afzal, earned
the win as she allowed just two hits and struck out four
batters in nine innings pitched. FP
freshman, Courtney
Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln), allowed no earned
runs on eight hits, struck out none and walked one in nine
innings of work despite the loss.

In game two, the
Bears and Ravens played another tight contest that went
six innings without a run.
Kelley Schultz scored
NYIT's gamewinner in the top of the seventh, as she reached
first on a fielder's choice, advanced to second after teammate
Elizabeth Sambrano grounded out to first, stole third and
then scored on an error in left field to seal the 1-0 win.
Higens allowed no
runs on six hits and struck out one in a complete game effort
to improve to 7-9. Freshman Amy Torla (Haverhill,
Mass./Haverhill) allowed no earned runs on eight
hits, struck out two and walked none in seven innings for
the loss.
