Sweeps Bridgeport
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 10, 2001)
- The Franklin Pierce University
softball team swept the University
of Bridgeport in a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon. FP
posted a 10-0 victory in five innings in game one, before
posting a 3-0 triumph in the nightcap.
In game one, FP
erupted for five
runs in the first inning and added four in the second to
stake out a 9-0 lead after an inning and a half of play.
Jessica Preite (North Adams, Mass./Greylock)
got the offense going with a two-run double in the first
inning. Brooke Remington
(Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony) added two-run single in
the same inning
and later scored on a single from Michelle Derochers
(Billerica, Mass./Billerica).
Quinn Tremblay (Westminster,
Mass./Oakmont) registered the key hit in the second inning,
a two-run double. She finished the afternoon, 2-3 with two
doubles and three RBIs.
Remington batted 3-3 with three runs
scored, two stolen bases, a double and two RBIs.
Lauren Chenausky (Athol, Mass./Athol) and
Carolyn Hall (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hansen)
both recorded a pair of hits.
Junior Shalyn Covey
(San Diego, Calif./Claremont) picked up her second win of
the season and first shutout as she scattered four hits
with three strikeouts and no walks in five innings.
In game two, FP
scored two runs
in the second inning to break a scoreless tie as senior
Heather Brouillette (Monson, Mass./Monson)
recorded a two-run single. The Ravens added an insurance
run in the fourth as sophomore Julie Haight
(Fort Montgomery, N.Y./O’Neill) belted an RBI double.
Brouillette finished the game, 2-3,
with the two RBIs, while senior Katelyn Kirby
(North Adams, Mass./Drury) also added a pair of hits.
Freshman Kalene Wotton
(Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) tossed the two-hit shutout,
fanning five and walking just one for her first collegiate
shutout.
FP
(6-8, 1-3 NE-10) returns to action
on Friday, when they travel to Southern Connecticut State
University for an NE-10 doubleheader at 1 p.m.
