Saint Anselm
Softball Sweeps Franklin Pierce
Manchester, N.H. (April 25, 2001)-The
Saint Anselm College Hawks swept a pair of games from a
feisty Franklin Pierce University
team on Wednesday in Northeast-10
Conference softball action in Manchester, N.H. After a 5-0
win in game one, Saint Anselm used some late inning magic
in game two to rally from a 3-0 deficit and win, 5-3.
The Ravens scored three unearned
runs in the third inning when a Saint Anselm error was followed
by a two-run double by Quinn Tremblay (Westminster,
Mass.). Franklin Pierce held the 3-0 lead until the sixth
inning when Saint Anselm put a pair of runs on the board.
Andrea Tortolano (Woburn,
Mass.) ripped a two-run double to right field to bring the
Hawks within a run at 3-2. With the sun going down, Saint
Anselm would win the game an inning later.
Kate Walsh (Milton, Mass.)
started off the seventh inning by stretching a single into
a double. Two batters later, Allison Pearson (Bedford,
N.H.) legged out an infield single. A throwing error after
the play, scored Walsh with the tying run and moved Pearson
to second.
Nicole Valila (Gardner, Mass.)
followed with a double to left field scoring Pearson with
the winning run. Saint Anselm scored another run to take
a 5-3 lead. Head Coach Guy Petell then handed the
ball over to Andrea Messina (Woburn, Mass.) who recorded
her second save of the season to preserve the win for Kate
Hall (Holliston, Mass.).
Tremblay finished with two hits in
the game for FP
while Kristen Haubrich (Concord,
N.H.) had a pair of hits and two stolen bases for the Hawks.
Hall helped her own cause with a pair of infield hits.
In the first game Saint Anselm plated
two unearned runs in the first inning and cruised to a 5-0
win behind the pitching of Messina. The
reigning NE-10 Pitcher of the Week spun a four-hitter and
struck out nine batters. She retired the first 15 batters
she faced before allowing a sixth inning single to Carolyn
Hall (Whitman, Mass.).
Franklin Pierce (9-23, 4-18 NE-10)
is scheduled to host a non-conference game against New Haven
on Friday.
