NEW HAVEN, Conn. (April 13, 2001)
- Southern Connecticut State belted 33 hits and scored 24
runs in a doubleheader sweep of Franklin Pierce University
in Northeast-10 Conference action at Pelz Field this afternoon.
Southern rolled to a 13-0 win in game one, and added an
11-1 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, the Owls Samantha
Byrne tossed a one-hit shutout, with five strikeouts
and two walks to lead the way past FPC. Southern scored
three runs in each the first and third innings and put the
game out of reach with six runs in the fifth.
FP
got its lone hit off the bat
of senior Katelyn Kirby (North Adams, Mass./Drury),
who singled. Junior Shayln Covey (San Diego,
Calif./Claremont) suffered the loss in the pitcher’s circle.
In game two, Southern got a pair
of runs in the first inning on an RBI double from Stacy
Silva. FP
responded with a leadoff homerun from freshman
Jessica Preite (North Adams, Mass./Greylock)
in the bottom of the second, but the Owls added a run in
the third inning and put the game out of reach with five
runs in the fifth.
Maureen Hoag earned the win
as she yielded just the one earned run on three hits with
six strikeouts and no walks. FP
freshman Kalene Wotton
(Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) took the loss.

(6-10, 1-5 NE-10) returns to
action on Saturday, when they travel to Waltham, Mass.,
to face Bentley College for a doubleheader at noon.
