Sweeps New
Haven
RINDGE, N.H. (April 27, 2001) - Franklin Pierce University
snapped an eight-game losing streak
with a sweep of the University of New Haven in a non-conference
softball doubleheader this afternoon. FP
posted a 3-2 win
in game one, before picking up a 2-1 decision in the nightcap.
In game one, senior Katelyn
Kirby (North Adams, Mass./Drury) hit 2-for-3 and
scored two of FPC’s three runs to lead the offense. Sophomore
Carolyn Hall (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hansen)
was also 2-3, while freshmen Michelle Derochers
(Billerica, Mass./Billerica) and
Jessica Preite (North Adams, Mass./Greylock)
each recorded RBI singles.
Junior Shalyn Covey
(San Diego, Calif./Claremont) picked up the win in the circle
as she allowed two runs, just one earned, on nine hits with
two strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. She yielded to freshman
Brittan Huntington (Whitehall, N.Y./Ticonderoga),
who struck out the only batter she faced to pick up her
second save of the season and strand the tying run on second
base.
Junior Kathleen Lawlor (Dracut,
Mass./Notre Dame) suffered the loss as she yielded three
earned runs on six hits with four K’s. She also sparked
the offense, hitting 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Senior Megan Kilbride (Guilford,
Conn./Guilford) batted 3-3, while junior Jenn Petti
(Watertown, Conn./Watertown) was 2-4 with a double and a
stolen base for New Haven.
In game two, the two teams scored
all their runs in the first inning in the 2-1 final. Petti
led off the game with a double for New Haven and scored
on a single by Blair Livingston.
In the FPC-half of the frame, the
Ravens took the lead with a pair of runs. Kirby was hit
by a pitch to leadoff the inning and later scored on a sacrifice
bunt from freshman Lauren Chenausky
(Athol, Mass./Athol). Hall, who singled after Kirby, scored
on a passed ball with
what proved to be the winning run.
Petti turned in another strong game
at the plate, hitting 2-3 with a double, a triple and two
stolen bases.
Kristen Boken suffered the loss despite
tossing a one-hitter. She allowed two runs, just one earned,
on one hit with five strikeouts and two walks.
Huntington picked up the win for FP
as she issued just one earned run on four hits with
nine K’s and one walk.
FP
(11-23, 4-18 NE-10) returns to
action on Sunday, when it hosts Assumption College for a
Conference doubleheader at noon. New Haven dropped to 18-24
with the losses.
