Hislop Leads List of Four 
All-Conference Ravens
Hislop collects second-straight NE-10 
Player of the Year award, fifth-straight 
for program

RINDGE, N.H. (November 9, 2005) – Four members of the Northeast-10 Conference Champion Franklin Pierce women’s soccer team collected All-Conference honors this week.

            Senior All-American Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) heads the list of All-Conference Ravens as she was voted NE-10 Player of the Year for the second-straight season by the Conference’s 15 head coaches. Hislop is the second-straight Raven to earn the award in back-to-back seasons, joining former teammate and All-American Meghan Welcome who earned the award in 2002 and 2003, and the award in the fifth-straight for the program overall.

            Joining Hislop on the All-Northeast-10 first team are senior All-American Sonya Hughes (Balbriggan, Ireland) and junior back Alex Scavo (Toronto, Ontario/Brother Andre), while junior back Mia Makarainen (Espoo, Finland) was selected to the All-NE-10 third team.            

Hislop, a first team All-Northeast-10 selection three-straight years, leads Franklin Pierce with 20 goals, nine assists and 49 points this season. She has also netted a team-best six match-winning goals in 18 matches played.

            Hislop, the NSCAA/adidas Division II Player of the Year in 2003, became just the second player in program history to reach the 200 career point plateau earlier this season. In 64 career matches played, she ranks second all-time with 211 points and 82 goals, while her 47 career assists are good for fifth all-time. Hislop, a two-time first team All-American, also ranks third with 18 career match-winning goals.            

Hughes, also a three-time All-Northeast-10 selection, is second on the team with nine goals (five match-winners) and eight assists for 26 points. She recently earned MVP honors for the NE-10 Tournament as she scored three goals, including the match-winner with just 38-seconds remaining in regulation in the Ravens 1-0 victory over No. 18 Assumption College in the title match.

            Hughes, who earlier earned NE-10 All-Academic honors for the second-straight year, is a two-time All-New England region performer and also collected All-America and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors in 2004. She currently ranks 11^th all-time at the College with 95 career points, while her 28 career goals are good for 15^th and her 39 career assists rank ninth in program history. Hughes also ranks seventh with 11 career match-winning goals.            

Scavo, a repeat All-NE-10 pick, helps lead a Ravens defensive unit which ranks second in the Conference with a 0.67 team goals against average and third with ten shutouts this season. Late in the season, Scavo has provided an added offensive presence and ranks third on the team with 15 points and seven goals to go with an assist.

            Scavo, an All-Conference and All-Region pick in 2004, is a converted forward and has been a key part of the Ravens defense each of the last two years. Still, in addition to matching her career-high goal total this fall, has totaled 19 goals and eight assists for 46 career points.

            Makarainen, also a repeat All-Conference selection, is also a leader for the Ravens defensive unit which ranks second in the Conference with a 0.67 team goals against average and third with ten shutouts this season. She was also recently named to the NE-10’s All-Academic first team for the second-straight year.            

Makarainen is a three-year starter in the Ravens defensive unit that has allowed just 0.72 goals per match in that time with 30 shutouts. She has also dished five career assists in 62 matches played. In addition to her All-Conference accolades, she is a two-time NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll Gold Scholar and collected ESPN The Magazine District I Academic All-America honors in 2004.

            Franklin Pierce (16-1-2, 12-1-1 NE-10) captured the Northeast-10 Conference regular season and tournament titles for the fifth-straight year and has earned its record 14^th-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. The Ravens will host the Division II New England Regional Friday and Sunday at Sodexho Field. The top-seeded Ravens host fourth-seeded and No. 25-ranked Merrimack College on Friday at 7 p.m. Second-seeded and No. 18-ranked Assumption College faces third-seeded UMass Lowell in the first match at 4:30 p.m. The winners will battle for the regional title on Sunday at 1 p.m.
