Hughes nets first career hat trick as Ravens post
fourth-straight shutout

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 16, 2004) – Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 6 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, matched a season-high with six goals and posted its fourth-straight shutout with a 6-0 decision over Le Moyne College in Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer action at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex this afternoon.

            Junior midfielder Sonya Hughes (Balbriggan, Ireland) netted the first hat trick of her Franklin Pierce career, while senior All-American Meghan Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) added two goals and junior All-American Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) chipped in a goal and assist for the Ravens.

Freshman goalkeeper Jenna Mello (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) recorded a first-half save to preserve her fourth shutout of the season and the fourth-straight clean sheet for Franklin Pierce dating back to its disappointing 2-1 loss to No. 22 Merrimack College on September 30.

            Freshman Jessica Cochol (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) finished with 11 saves for Le Moyne who was out-shot by Franklin Pierce, 31-5.

            The Ravens carried a 2-0 lead into the intermission thanks to goals from Hughes in the 22nd minute, off a Le Moyne defensive turnover, and Welcome in the 31st, assisted by freshman Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic).

            Franklin Pierce put the match out of reach with four goals within a ten-minute span early in the second half. Hughes opened the flurry, assisted by Hislop, at 51:51, and then finished off her hat trick 42-seconds later with her second unassisted marker of the match. Welcome completed her double at 61:14, assisted by junior Leanne Bowler (Clonalvy, Ireland), before Hislop netted her 18th goal of the season on a breakaway 38-seconds later at 61:52.

            Franklin Pierce (11-1, 9-1 NE-10) continues a five-match stretch in a span of ten days on Monday at the College of Saint Rose in a rematch of last year’s NCAA New England Region title match at 3:30 p.m. Le Moyne (5-9-1, 3-8-1 NE-10) hosts Roberts Wesleyan College on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
