#10 Franklin Pierce Edges
Bentley, 2-1

Welcome nets winner, becomes eighth in
program history to reach 100 career points

RINDGE, N.H. (October 11, 2003) – Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 10 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, needed two second half goals to erase a one-goal halftime deficit and post a 2-1 victory over Bentley College, receiving votes in this week’s NSCAA/adidas poll, in Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer action at Crystal Field this afternoon.

Junior All-American Meghan Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) netted the match-winning goal at the 75:35-mark to cap the Franklin Pierce comeback. She was on the scoring end of a give-and-go with sophomore Laura Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) in front of the Bentley net.

The goal was Welcome’s Conference-leading 16th of the season and she became the eighth player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau for her career. She also moved into second all-time among US-born players at the College, behind just Amy Hanlon (’96) who finished her four-year career with 124 career points. Welcome’s 43 career goals also ranks eighth all-time at Franklin Pierce.

Franklin Pierce, ranked second in the New England Region, controlled possession for nearly the entire first half, but Bentley, ranked third in the region, broke open the scoring just six seconds shy of the intermission when sophomore Lauren Hobbie-Welch (Clarksburg, Mass./Drury) took advantage of a Ravens miscue in the back and fired a shot from the top of the penalty area on the Falcons second shot of the match.

Senior Jillian Tente knotted the match at 1-1 in the second half.

Franklin Pierce drew even in the 59th minute when senior Jillian Tente (Wakefield, Mass./South Kingstown) one-timed a corner kick from sophomore Sonya Hughes (Balbriggan, Ireland) at the far post after two other Ravens missed on the kick. It marked Tente’s second goal of the season and came less than two minutes after she had entered the match.

The Ravens, now unbeaten in their last 92 home matches against New England Region opponents, out-shot the Falcons by a 15-5 margin for the match, including 9-2 over the opening 45-minutes.

Bentley senior goalkeeper Erin Fahey (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) registered five saves on the afternoon. Franklin Pierce freshman Linnea Authier (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) made her second career start and did not register a stop.

Franklin Pierce (11-2, 10-1 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when it visits Green Mountain College for a non-conference match at 3:30 p.m. Bentley (8-2-2, 6-2-2 NE-10) hosts No. 2 Merrimack College on Monday at 3 p.m.
