Franklin Pierce Rebounds with Win over Angelo State, 4-1
Scavo,
Hislop pace Ravens to victory
COMMERCE,
Texas. (September 14, 2003) –
Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 3 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, rebounded from
its first regular season loss in nearly three seasons on Friday with a
4-1 victory over Angelo State University in non-conference women’s
soccer action at Texas A&M-Commerce this afternoon.
Freshman forward Alex Scavo (Markham, Ontario/Brother
Andre) totaled five points and sophomore forward Laura
Hislop (Belfast, Northern Ireland) dished three assists to lead
Franklin Pierce. Sophomore midfielder Sonya Hughes (Balbriggan,
Ireland) chipped in with pair of helpers.
The Ravens, coming off their first regular season loss since
October, 2000, to No. 16 Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, struck early
today when junior All-American Meghan Welcome (Haverhill,
Mass./Haverhill) netted her team-leading seventh goal of the
season just 7:50 into the contest. Hislop and freshman Mia
Makarainen (Espoo, Finland) were credited with assists on the
play.
Hislop and Hughes set up Scavo’s first of two goals on the
afternoon just over ten minutes later from ten yards out at the
18:08-mark.
Angelo State pulled a goal back just 2:18 later when junior Shana
Brown (Tucson, Ariz./Santa Rita) connected with sophomore Casey
Halamicek (San Angelo, Texas/Central) for a breakaway goal.

Franklin
Pierce regained its two-goal cushion in the 34th minute when
Hughes and Hislop connected with Scavo again, who headed in her third
marker of the season. The Ravens closed out the scoring in the 72nd
minute when senior Jillian Tente (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown)
netted her first goal of the season from five yards out off a pass from
Scavo on the left side.
Ravens senior goalkeeper Aase Kibsgaard (Korgen, Norway)
registered a career-best eight saves to preserve the victory and avoid
back-to-back losses for the first time since 1993. Rambelles junior Lisa
Carey (Spring, Texas/Klein) made eight saves of her own in the
losing cause.
Franklin
Pierce (4-1, 3-0 NE-10) returns to Northeast-10 Conference action this
week when it hosts Assumption College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Angelo
State (2-3) hosts Saint Mary’s College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
