Franklin Pierce Rallies by Stonehill, 3-1 EASTON, Mass. (September 25, 2002) - Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 3 in this week’s National Soccer Coach Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, needed three second half goals to avoid upset and post a 3-1 victory at Stonehill College, ranked fourth in New England, in Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer action at Chieftain Stadium this afternoon. Franklin Pierce saw its string of 28-straight Northeast-10 victories remain intact, but yielded a goal for the first time this season as a penalty kick tally by Stonehill sophomore Carolyn Cooneyended the Ravens string of 572 scoreless minutes to open the season. Franklin Pierce opened the season with a school-record six shutouts. The Ravens evened the match in the 57th minute when sophomore Meghan Welcome (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) netted her first of two goals on the afternoon with a penalty kick. She netted the gamewinner at the 71-minute mark, assisted by senior Andrea Caesar (Visby, Sweden).
Franklin Pierce freshman Elizabeth Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine/Sumner) provided an insurance tally in the 85th minute when she converted a pass from senior tri-captain Anumari Ylesmaki (Vantaa, Finland). Ravens junior goalkeeper Aase Kibsgaard (Korgen, Norway) matched a season-high with four saves, but saw her personal string of 458 shutout minutes come to an end. Stonehill junior Meaghan Doherty made seven stops as Franklin Pierce registered a 22-9 shots advantage for the match.
