RINDGE, N.H. (September
28, 2000) - The normally reserved veneer of
Jeff Bailey was not present during an emotional
halftime speech after the Franklin Pierce University
women's soccer coach witnessed the third straight
lackluster half turned in by his team.
Bailey's impassioned
talk was followed by an inspired 45 minutes
of play that saw the Ravens rally past upset-minded
Bentley College, 3-1, Thursday in front of a
crowd of 300 at Crystal Field.
First-year junior Julia
Uusmalmi (Tampere, Finland) scored all three
goals, two in the second half, as the defending
NCAA Division II champions stretched their two-year
winning streak to 20 matches. FP
is 6-0 this
year and remained unbeaten in the Northeast-10
at 4-0.
Bentley (3-4, 3-4 NE-10)
struck first when Anna Angileri (Medford, Mass.)
scored on a loose ball that followed a corner
kick by Alaina Evans (Hanover, Mass.) in the
11th minute. The shot was the first of seven
the Falcons put on net.
With three of FPC's
four leading scorers not in the starting lineup
because of sickness, Uusmalmi filled the void
with a dominating performance in the midfield.
The former Finnish national
team player tied the game in the 22nd minute
on a blast to far top corner from 25 yards.
And, as the Ravens began to get the better of
play in the second half, Uusmalmi made the pressure
pay off, scoring the game-winner on a corner
kick in the 65th minute and an insurance marker
off a nice feed from Sinikka Salomaa (Tampere,
Finland) in the 72nd minute. She now has eight
goals on the year.
The Ravens held advantages
in shots (20-8) and corner kicks (5-3). Bentley
goalkeeper Rebecca Wollman (Plymouth, Mass.)
made six saves, while FP
keeper Kim Higgins
(Rochester, N.H.) registered five.
The Ravens are back
in action Saturday when they host defending
NAIA champion Westmont College, while the Falcons
also resume play Saturday as they host the College
of St. Rose.
