RINDGE, N.H. (October 17, 2007) Four members of the Franklin Pierce University women’s soccer team have earned spots on the Northeast-10 Conference All-Academic Teams as selected by the Conference’s 15 sports information directors. The announcement was made by the NE-10 office this afternoon. To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, student-athletes must have met or exceeded the following requirements: 1.) participated in a least half of the team’s competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2.) achieved a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and 3.) completed at least one academic year at their current institution.

Senior midfielder Jenna Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) was selected to the All-Academic first team, while junior Ann Foley (Foxborough, Mass./Rockland) and sophomore Rachel Smith (Chichester, N.H./Bible Baptist School (Pa.)) were both voted to the second team and junior Melissa Hagmire (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia) earned third team honors. Giardina and Foley are both repeat honorees, while Smith and Hagmire both collect All-Academic honors for the first time.

Jenna Giardina

Giardina earns All-Academic honors for the second-straight year and has achieved a 3.345 cumulative grade point average while majoring in business at Franklin Pierce. Voted to the All-Academic second team last fall, she also earned ESPN The Magazine District I Academic All-America third team honors as well as All-NE-10 second team and Daktronics All-New England region honors.

Giardina has started all 16 matches for Franklin Pierce this fall and leads the Northeast-10 with ten assists to go with four goals for 18 points (10th NE-10). She is ranked third on the Ravens in both goals and points and has also contributed one match-winning goal so far this season.

The midfielder had a breakout season for Franklin Pierce in 2006, ranking second on the team with seven goals and seven assists for 21 points in 20 matches played (11 starts). In 80 career matches played, Giardina has totaled 12 goals and 24 assists for 48 career points. She is just two points and two assists shy of cracking the program’s all-time lists in those categories.

Giardina also played two seasons on the Franklin Pierce softball team and last spring played women’s lacrosse, where she ranked third on the team with 11 goals and five assists for 16 points.

Ann Foley

Foley, selected to the NE-10 All-Academic second team for the second-straight year, has earned a 3.537 cumulative GPA while majoring in sports and recreation management at Franklin Pierce. She is a two-time NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient, earning Silver Scholar status last year after achieving Bronze Scholar honors as a freshman.

Foley has played ten matches this season, starting three, for Franklin Pierce and netted a goal for two points. She was one of two Ravens to play all 22 matches in 2006, collecting a goal and three assists for five points after totaling four goals and six assists for 14 points in 22 matches to lead all Franklin Pierce freshmen in 2005.

Foley has totaled six goals and nine assists for 21 points in 54 career matches played. She also played on the women’s lacrosse team last fall.

Rachel Smith

Smith earns All-Academic honors for the first time with her spot on the second team. She has posted a 3.635 cumulative GPA while majoring in business at the University and earned NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll Silver Scholar honors as a freshman.

A converted forward, Smith leads a Franklin Pierce defensive unit which ranks second in the NE-10 with a 0.59 team goals against average and nine shutouts this season. She also leads all Raven defenders with two goals and four points while starting all 16 matches.

Smith started 16 of 21 matches played as a freshman forward in 2006 and ranked fourth for Franklin Pierce with five goals and two assists for 12 points. She has now totaled seven goals and two assists for 16 points in 37 career matches played over two seasons.

Melissa Hagmire

Hagmire, also a first time NE-10 All-Academic pick with her selection to the third team, has earned a 3.441 cumulative GPA while majoring in business management at Franklin Pierce. She was also an NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll Bronze Scholar in 2006-07.

Hagmire has started all 16 matches for Franklin Pierce this fall and is a key part of a Ravens defensive unit which ranks second in the NE-10 with a 0.59 team goals against average and nine shutouts this season. She has also contributed a goal and assists for the first three points of her collegiate career this fall.

Hagmire started seven of ten matches played in 2006 and played 14 matches (one start) as a freshman. The Ravens defensive unit has ranked among NE-10 and NCAA Division II leaders each season.

Franklin Pierce (11-1-4, 8-1-4 NE-10), ranked 18th in this week’s National Soccer Coaches’ Association (NSCAA)/adidas Division II and third in the New England region, rounds out its regular season schedule on Saturday when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University in an NE-10 match at 3 p.m.
