Southern N.H. Takes Down Franklin Pierce, 19-6

MANCHESTER, N.H. (March 25, 2008) – Eleven different Penwomen scored at least one goal as Southern New Hampshire University defeated Franklin Pierce University, 19-6, in the Ravens’ 2008 Northeast-10 Conference women’s lacrosse opener on Tuesday afternoon at Larkin Field.
Sophomore Carole Lee (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) led a very balanced SNHU attack with a team-high three goals, while six other teammates scored two goals each. Classmate Jami Shugrue (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) added three assists to her two goals for a team-high five points, while senior Nicole Downey (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) recorded one goal and three assists for four points.
Freshman Lauren Stille (North Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) was the only offensive option for Franklin Pierce against the Penwomen, as she scored all six of the Raven goals on the day. Senior captain Celine Stamets (Sausalito, Calif./Mavin Catholic) and freshman Jillian Benn (North Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) also recorded assists, with Benn picking up her first collegiate point.

The Penwomen began strong by scoring the first three goals of the game, as three different players scored in the first 5:32 of the contest, but Stille responded with a pair of tallies in a 45-second span to bring the Ravens back within a goal 6:38 in. However, Southern New Hampshire scored the final seven goals of the first half to take control headed into halftime, and the home team’s lead never shrunk to fewer than eight over the final 30 minutes of play
Southern New Hampshire held a 28-17 advantage in shots on goal for the afternoon. Freshman goaltender Chaniece Franklyn (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) made nine saves for the Ravens, while junior Katie Clark (Norwich, Conn./St. Bernard) turned away 11 shots for SNHU.
Franklin Pierce (1-2, 0-1 NE-10) completes its four-game road trip to begin the season on Thursday night, as the Ravens travel to Smithfield, R.I., to take on Bryant University at 7 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (4-2, 4-0 NE-10) heads on the road for three games beginning Thursday at 4 p.m. at Molloy College.
