New Haven Tops Franklin Pierce, 15-5

WEST HAVEN, CONN. (April 24, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce Women’s Lacrosse team suffered a tough 15-5 loss to the University of New Haven in non-conference action this evening at the University of New Haven. The Ravens held a 3-1 lead early in the first half, but the Chargers rallied off ten goals in the second half to earn their fourth victory of the season.
University of New Haven freshman Brigid Brady (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) led all scorers with a game-high six points on six goals. Senior Jamie Metcalf (Sound Beach, N.Y.) and freshman Mallory Ferrandiz (W. Sayville, N.Y.) each totaled four points on the day. Metcalf posted one goal and three assists, while Ferrandiz registered three goals and added one helper. Senior Britt Treagar (Victoria, British Columbia) chipped in with three total points, on two goals and one assist.

Franklin Pierce used a balanced offensive attack as five Ravens
netted goals. Freshman Carla Savini (Danvers, Mass./Danvers),
junior Nicole McKinnon (Northfield,
N.H./Winnasquam) and
senior April Silva (E. Falmouth, Mass./Sacred Heart
University) each tallied first half goals for the Ravens,
while freshman Kayleigh Jaksina (Townsend, Mass./North
Middlesex) and junior Ashley Hayes (Jordan,
N.Y./Cayuga Community College) recorded second-half scores
to round out the Ravens attack.
Franklin Pierce jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Savini and McKinnon registered back to back goals to open the first half. After a New Haven goal, Silva responded 30 seconds later with her seventh goal of the season to put the Ravens back on top by two.
Trailing 3-1 midway through the first frame, New Haven posted four unanswered goals, three by Brady, to take a 5-3 advantage heading into halftime. In the second half, the Chargers exploded for ten goals and limited the Ravens to just two to secure the victory. Brady and Ferrandiz led the Chargers ten goal attack, each posting three scores in the second half.
The University of New Haven out-shot Franklin Pierce 40-14 and held a 34-27 advantage in groundballs. Franklin Pierce junior goalkeeper Erin Hopkins (Pen Yan, N.Y./Pen Yan) made 16 saves despite the loss, while Charger goalkeeper, senior Heather Gebhardt (E. Rochester, N.Y.) recorded nine stops to earn the victory.
Franklin Pierce (0-14, 0-9 NE-10)
will travel to Saint Anselm College on Saturday for its final
regular season match of the year at 1 p.m. The University of New
Haven (4-9, 2-1 NYCAC) will host No. 2 ranked C.W. Post on Wednesday
at 4 p.m.
