Saint Anselm’s Tops Franklin Pierce, 15-5

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 29, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce Women’s Lacrosse team suffered a tough 15-5 loss to Saint Anselm’s College in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at Melucci Field. The Hawks scored the first four goals of the match and posted 10 goals in the first half to register their eighth victory of the season.
Saint Anselm’s junior Colleen Sheehan (N. Andover, Mass.) led all scorers with a game high four points on four goals, while freshman Michaela Rocha (Rye, N.H.) and junior Lauren Glancy (Scituate, Mass.) each added three. Five other Hawk players tallied goals to round out the Saint Anselm offense.
Franklin Pierce was led offensively by senior April Silva (East Falmouth, Mass./Sacred Heart University) a team-high three goals on her first hat-trick of the season. Freshman Carla Savini (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) and sophomore Celine Stamets (Sausalito, Cali./Mavin Catholic) aided the Raven’s offense, each contributing one goal a piece.
Saint Anselm opened the matching recording four unanswered goals to take an early 4-0 lead. After a score by Silva, the Hawks rallied off six more goals to increase its lead to 10-1 heading into halftime. In the second half, Saint Anselm extended its lead to 13-1 before Franklin Pierce scored three unanswered goals in five minutes to cut the Hawk nine. Savini started the rally with an unassisted goal at the 9:04 mark, and Silva followed with two goals at the 13:26 and 14:30 marks to lead the Ravens.
The Hawks out-shot Franklin Pierce 39-11 and held a 28-14 advantage in groundballs. Hawks goaltender, freshman Lindsey O’Brien (Sandwich, Mass.) made four saves in the win while the Ravens’ junior Erin Hopkins (Penyan, NY/Kayuga Community College) made 15 stops despite the loss.
Franklin Pierce ends the regular
season at 0-15 overall and 0-11 in the Northeast-10. The Hawks
await an invitation to the NE-10 tournament ending the season at
7-7-1 overall and 5-5 in conference play. The NE-10 tournament is
set to begin on Wednesday, May 3, and includes the top six teams
from the conference.
