Flies Past Pace, 72-61 RINDGE, N.H. (January 8, 2003) - Senior Jennifer Webster (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) netted a game-high 24 points to lead Franklin Pierce to a 72-61 win over Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball action at the Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse this evening. Franklin Pierce took advantage of 27 Pace turnovers, turning them into 24 points on the other end. The Ravens posted a 17-2 scoring advantage off turnovers on the opening half to help build a 39-28 advantage at the break. Webster was aided by a nine-of-ten effort at the free-throw line and grabbed nine rebounds to go with four steals. Junior Susan Ocitti (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge R&L) recorded her third double-double of the season (tenth career) as she posted 13 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the floor, in addition to grabbing ten rebounds (five offensive). Classmate Tara Bligh (Milton, Mass./Milton) and sophomore Patricia Lang (Monroe, N.H./St. Johnsbury Academy) each registered ten points, with Lang also adding three assists and three steals.
Pace was led by sophomore Andrea Padelsky who totaled 18 points, canning a career-best six three-pointers on 13 attempts. Senior Nina Ribbeklint followed with 13 points, five rebounds and four steals, while junior Melissa Liverpool chipped in 11 points. The teams battled back and fourth throughout most of the first half, as the lead changed seven times before the Ravens went on a 12-0 run, capped by a Maria Clifton (New York City, St. John's H.S.) field goal with 1:50 left to take a 13-point lead (37-24). Franklin Pierce built its lead to 18 (57-39), its largest of the game, after a Webster three-point play with 1:33 to play. The Setters mounted a comeback, trimming the lead to six points (57-51) after Padelsky sparked an 11-0 run with a three-point field goal at the 7:27 mark. Bligh and Webster helped finish off the Setters combining for 11 points in the final two minutes of regulation to seal the win. Franklin Pierce (6-6, 3-6 NE-10) hosts Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at 1:30 p.m. Pace (2-10, 0-8 NE-10) will next host UMass Lowell in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. |
