Pierce Cruises Past EAST STROUDSBURG. Pa. (December 9, 2005) –
Franklin
Pierce cruised to its fourth-straight win with a commanding 63-38
non-conference victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas College on day one of
the Panaia-Soloway Pocono Classic, hosted by East Stroudsburg
University, this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce held just a two-point (27-25) halftime lead,
but connected on 60-percent (15-25) shots from the field over the
final 20 minutes, while limiting St. Thomas Aquinas to 13 second-half
points on 18.2% (4-22) shooting. Franklin Pierce, without the services of senior captain Heather Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton), used a balanced offensive attack. Freshman Jennifer Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England) nearly notched her first career double-double, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds to go with four assists and three steals. Junior Danielle D’Ettorre (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/St. Mary’s) totaled a game-high 14 points, on six-of-eight shooting from the field, two rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Josie Lidke (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) added ten points, hitting 4-5 from the field, including 2-2 three-pointers, and four steals.
Senior
Kelly McManus (Pearl
River, N.Y./Pearl River)
totaled 11 points and three rebounds to lead STAC, while sophomore Erika
Ostrove (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill)
contributed 11 points, aided by 4-5 shooting from the field. Freshman Corinne Albrecht (Samsonville, N.Y./Coleman Catholic)
grabbed a game-high ten rebounds to go with seven points, two assists
and two steals.
STAC led much of the first half, including a six-point edge
(25-19) after an Erin
Kilduff (Parlin, N.J./Cardinal McCarrick)
three-pointer with 6:16 to play in the stanza, but Franklin Pierce
closed out the half with an 8-0 run to take a two-point lead into the
intermission. Sophomore Stephanie Bergeron (Pointe Claire, Quebec/Dawson College)
capped the run with a lay-up with 56-seconds left.
Kayla Waite (Butler,
N.J./Morris Catholic)
drained a three-pointer to start the second half and regain the
Spartans lead, but a 10-0 Franklin Pierce run put the Ravens up 39-30,
after a Leedham jumper, with 13:51 to play.
Franklin Pierce’s lead was eight (41:33) with 11:17 on the
clock and the Ravens iced the contest with an 18-4 run to open a
commanding 22-point advantage (59-37) with 4:19 left in regulation.
Lidke canned a three-pointer to spark the run and D’Ettorre capped
the rally with a lay-up. Franklin Pierce (5-3, 4-1 NE-10) rounds out the two-day event tomorrow when it faces Salem International University of West Virginia at 1 p.m. STAC (2-6, 2-1 NYCAC) faces host East Stroudsburg tomorrow at 6 p.m. |
