to erase three-point halftime deficit

RINDGE, N.H. (January 15, 2005) – Southern Connecticut State University erased a three-point halftime deficit and posted a 65-54 victory over Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball action at the Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse this afternoon.

Senior Kim Jackle (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) led four Southern Connecticut players in double-figures as she hit five-of-ten from three-point range en route to 21 points, a team-best six rebounds and three steals. Junior Kristi Stolle (Warren, Conn./Wamogo) added 13 points, six rebounds and three assists, while sophomore Jackie Collins (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) finished with ten points and five boards. Senior Brigitte Metzger (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) chipped in ten points in 17 minutes off the bench.

The loss squandered a career-best 23 points from junior Heather Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) as she hit 7-of-12 from the field and canned 7-9 from the free-throw line for the day. She scored 16 points in the first half and also finished with eight rebounds.

Sophomore Danielle D'Ettorre finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore Danielle D’Ettorre (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/St. Mary’s) was the only other Raven in double-digits with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman Josie Lidke (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) chipped in eight rebounds and five assists.

The Ravens took a three-point lead (28-25) into the intermission in part due to a 4-8 effort from three-point range, but hit just 1-10 from beyond the arc in the final half while Southern hit 5-11 three-pointers in the second and canned all 13 of its second-half attempts at the free-throw line.

After a first half, which featured four ties and eight lead changes, Southern opened the second with a 9-1 run to take a five-point lead (34-29) 3:13 into the half. Stolle sparked the rally when she was fouled while hitting a three-pointer and hit the free throw for a four-point play to knot the score. Jackle capped the run with a three-pointer of her own.

Franklin Pierce regained the lead (35-34) after a D’Ettorre layup with 15 minutes on the clock. After the two teams traded three’s inside of 12 minutes to play, the Owls used a 14-1 run to open their first double-digit lead (55-42) with 5:34 left in regulation. Jackle canned two from long-distance during the stretch.

The Ravens would get within seven points on two occasions, the last of which came after a Jacobs free-throw with 2:17 to play, but no closer as Southern iced the game by hitting all four free-throw attempts in the final minute.

Franklin Pierce (8-5, 5-4 NE-10) returns to action on Monday when it visits the College of Saint Rose at 5:30 p.m. Southern Connecticut (12-2, 8-2 NE-10) hosts Southern New Hampshire University on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
