D’Ettorre sparks Ravens to season-opening victory

COLCHESTER, Vt. (Nov. 20, 2004) – The Franklin Pierce women’s basketball team opened up their season with an 88-50 victory over non-conference foe Dowling College in the first game of the Clarion Tip Off Classic hosted by Saint Michael’s College today. Danielle D’Ettorre (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/St. Mary’s) notched 21 points, while Mollie Stelmack (New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster) added 20 of her own in the win.

            After leading 39-28 at the end of the first half, the Ravens dominated the second frame, outscoring Dowling 49-22. Franklin Pierce shot 60.0-percent (18-30) from the field, including four-of-six from three point range to open up a huge lead in the second half. For the game, the Ravens outshot Dowling 51.6-percent to 39.6-percent and made 50.0-percent (9-18) of their three point attempts. Franklin Pierce also owned a 39-32 rebounding advantage.

            D’Ettorre connected on nine of her 15 shots from the field en route to a 21 point night. The sophomore forward also added seven rebounds (four offensive), four steals and three assists. Fellow sophomore, Stelmack drained six-of-eight three pointers and registered five assists from the point guard position to lead the team. Junior forward Maria Clifton (New York, N.Y./Saint Michael’s Academy) grabbed a team-leading eight boards (four offensive), and freshman Josie Lidke (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) registered 14 points and four assists in her collegiate debut.

            Dowling was led by senior guard Laura Mullally (Athlone, Ireland) and freshman forward Christina Mitchell (Streamwood, Ill.) who totaled 12 and ten points respectively. Junior center Lorren Galloway (Marietta, Ga.) had a team-best four rebounds, while sophomore guard Brigid Lyons (Coram, N.Y.) posted a team-high four assists in the loss. 

The Clarion Tip Off Classic concludes tomorrow with a second doubleheader. In the first game, Franklin Pierce (1-0) will take on St. Thomas Aquinas at 1 p.m. That will be followed by a meeting between host Saint Michael’s and Dowling (0-1) at 3 p.m.
