NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 13, 2007) – Junior co-captain Nicole Buchholz (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) recorded 13 kills to lead all players as the Franklin Pierce University women’s volleyball team picked up its eighth conference win of the season with a 3-0 (35-33, 30-22, 30-27) victory over Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at Pelz Gymnasium.

Buchholz added six digs, three kills and a service ace to lead the Raven attack. She was helped by sophomore Caitlynn Parnell (Medina, Texas/Medina), who returned to the court after an ankle injury forced her to miss the last 11 matches. Parnell posted 10 kills and two digs for the Ravens.

Junior co-captain Karissa Hookstadt (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo) also played well for the visitors, leading all players with 36 assists and 11 digs to go along with three kills, three blocks and a service ace.

Sophomore Caitlynn Parnell returned to action after an 11-match layoff and posted 10 kills on Saturday against Southern Connecticut.

For Southern Connecticut, Tara Bregensir (Coal Township, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes) led the way with 10 kills, five digs and a block, while Lauren Coombs (Trumbull, Conn./Fairleigh Dickinson) added nine kills, 10 digs and three blocks.

In a very tough first game, both teams had their share of opportunities but the Ravens escaped with a 35-33 win. Franklin Pierce staved off two Owl game points, and the visitors finally converted on their fourth game point opportunity thanks to a kill from Buchholz.

Franklin Pierce took game two behind a late 7-0 run that turned a tenuous 21-19 lead into a comfortable 28-19 advantage, and Buchholz posted kills on the team’s final two points of the game. The Ravens continued that momentum into the third game, holding off Southern and taking the match in three games.

Franklin Pierce (14-12, 8-3 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday evening, when the Ravens travel to Colchester, Vt., to take on Saint Michael’s in a Northeast-10 match beginning at 7 p.m. Southern Connecticut (10-17, 2-6 NE-10) will take on the University of Bridgeport in a non-conference match on Tuesday night.
