Franklin Pierce
comes back to defeat C.W. Post, 3-2
RINDGE, N.H. (August 30, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce University volleyball team lost the first two games, but came back to win the last three to defeat the Pioneers of Long Island University-C.W. Post, 3-2 (28-30, 28-30, 30-22, 30-17, 15-13) on Thursday afternoon at the Franklin Pierce Fieldhouse. The match marked the first time that the Ravens came back from a 2-0 deficit to win since Sept. 11, 2003 against Teikyo Post. The two teams played very evenly in the first two games of the match, with the visiting Pioneers taking both games by a score of 30-28. C.W. Post was led in the first two games by Jessica Lubeski (Bishopville, Md./Hewlett (N.Y.) and Sarah Coufal (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium), who combined for 18 kills as the Pioneers recorded a team attacking percentage of .286 and .233 in the two games. In the next two games, however, the home team came to life, winning by scores of 30-22 and 30-17. The Ravens jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 13-5 in the third game, led by junior setter Karissa Hookstadt (Camarillo, Calif./Camarillo), who recorded 13 assists on 18 Raven kills in the game. The team increased the intensity in game four, making only two errors and recording 13 kills in a 13-point win. Junior middle hitter Nicole Buchholz (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) recorded six kills for the Ravens in the game.
The fifth game was very competitive, as the teams were separated by more than two points only once. The important swing of momentum for the Ravens came with five consecutive points that turned a 10-8 deficit into a 13-10 lead that the Ravens would not give up. Redshirt freshman Michelle Koike (San Francisco, Calif./Gonzaga University) held serve for the Ravens during that stretch, adding two service aces. Coufal led the Pioneers with 21 kills and 17 digs while Lubeski added 18 kills and 14 digs. For the Ravens, sophomore Caitlynn Parnell (Medina, Texas/Medina) matched her career-high with a team-leading 19 kills while Hookstadt narrowly missed a double-double with 50 assists and nine digs. Franklin Pierce also had excellent performances from Buchholz, who recorded a season-high 18 kills, and sophomore Katie Ristow (Miami, Fla./Miami Killian Senior HS), who recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 digs and 11 kills. Franklin Pierce (1-4, 0-0 NE-10) will return to the road this weekend, as the team travels to West Haven, Conn. for two games at the Baden Invitational on Saturday. The Ravens take on host New Haven at 11 a.m. and battle with Bridgeport at 2 p.m. C.W. Post (3-2, 0-0 ECC) returns home to take on Bloomfield Saturday at noon. Franklin Pierce def. C.W.
