Pierce Rolls Past MANCHESTER,
N.H. (Oct. 6, 2004) –
The Franklin Pierce volleyball team defeated host Southern New
Hampshire University 3-1 (19-20, 30-19, 30-27, 30-18) tonight in
Northeast-10 competition, giving the Ravens a 2-1 edge in head-to-head
competition with the Penwomen this season. With the win, Franklin
Pierce improves its overall record to 6-9 and its conference mark to
4-6. Southern New Hampshire drops to 5-9 overall and 4-6 in league
play. The
Ravens received solid contributions from a number of players tonight.
Senior co-captain Briana Bates (Belmont, N.H./Endicott College)
led the way with 18 kills and three blocks, while sophomore Michelle
McConnell (Elora, Ontario/Centre Wellington) chipped in with
16 kills, four digs and two blocks. The Franklin Pierce defense was
led by junior co-captain Tara Vece (Clinton, Conn./Morgan
School) who had 16 digs, while the duo of freshman Bria
Williams (Chino Valley, Ariz./Chino Valley) and sophomore Kathleen
Tryon (Tilton, N.H./Winninsquam) directed the offense with 31
and 16 assists respectively. Sophomore outside hitter Christina
Collett (Tombstone, Ariz./Tombstone) rounded out the Ravens
attack, as she posted 14 kills to go along with three digs. Leading
the way for the Penwomen were sophomore Amy Charbonneau
(Windham, N.H./Alvirne) and senior Lise Laczek
(Cheshire, Conn./Chesire). Charbonneau contributed eleven kills and eleven digs, while
Laczek added ten kills and 17 digs. Junior Brittany Porter
(Riverton, Wy./Riverton) tallied ten kills for Southern New
Hampshire, while sophomore Colleen Eddy (Dracut, Mass./Central
Catholic) posted a team-high 22 digs. Orchestrating the
offense was senior Kristin Ellis (Belmont, N.H./Belmont)
who had 23 assists to go along with nine digs. Junior Kristin
Cowles (Lansing, N.Y./Lansing) also added 21 assists for the
Penwomen. Franklin Pierce (6-9, 4-6 NE-10) will return to the courts on Friday when they travel to Colby-Sawyer College for a non-conference match beginning at 7 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (5-9, 4-6 NE-10) will be in action this weekend, as they participate in the Saint Anselm Invitational. They will take on non-conference foes LIU-Southampton on Friday at 7 p.m. and Adelphi University at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Franklin Pierce 3, Southern New Hampshire 1
