Franklin Pierce Competes in East Regional
Women’s Varsity Four tops Mercyhurst and Dowling

ERIE, Pa. (May 4, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce men’s and women’s rowing teams competed in an East Regional format last weekend, with the Ravens women’s varsity four defending its No. 1 ranking by the NCAA Division II East Regional committee.

            Franklin Pierce’s women’s varsity four completed the 2,000-meter course in 8:14.26 to place ahead of both Mercyhurst College (8:33.73) and Dowling College (8:55.51). Rowing for the Ravens were senior Meagan Gross (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) at stroke, junior Blair Granum (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) in the two seat, senior Elizabeth Ward (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) at three seat and sophomore Cassie Ela (Lancaster, Mass./Nashoba Regional) in the bow, with sophomore Vanessa Leon (Lenox, Mass./Lenox) as the coxswain.

            Franklin Pierce’s women’s varsity eight didn’t fare quite as well, placing third among the East Region powers with a time of 7:55.6. Dowling, likely to represent the region at the 2007 NCAA Division II Rowing Championships later this month, posted a time of 7:00.85, while Mercyhurst completed the 2,000-meters in 7:24.75. Rowing for the Ravens were Gross, Granum, Ward, and Ela, along with senior Amanda Ege (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman), junior Gwenn Curtis (Falls Village, Conn./Housatonic Valley) and freshmen Melissa Doherty (West Barnstable, Mass./Barnstable) and Jessica Guertin, with Leon as coxswain.

            Franklin Pierce’s men’s rowing program also competed on the weekend in a head-to-head dual with Mercyhurst. The men’s varsity eight posted a time of 7:01.44, while Mercyhurst completed the course in 6:36.12. Rowing for the Ravens were senior Justin Watson (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) at stroke, freshman Ian Randall (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) in the two seat, senior Rich Connell (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) at three seat, junior Bill Eroh (Meriden, Conn./Lyman Hall) at four seat, freshman Patrick Brosnan (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) at five seat, Brett Dicre in the six seat, Wade Rodgers (West Greenwich, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich Regional) at seven seat and sophomore Josh Marker (Lockport, N.Y./St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute) in the bow, with freshman Jessica Ward (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) as the coxwain.

            Franklin Pierce’s men’s varsity four posted a time of 7:30.23, while Mercyhurst completed the course in 7:10.01. Rowing for the Ravens were Marker, Connell, Eroh and Watson, with junior Brittany Bonesteel (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) as the coxswain.

            Franklin Pierce is back on the water this weekend for the New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The four’s championships are Saturday, with the eights scheduled for Sunday.
