Franklin Pierce Freshmen RINDGE, N.H. (October 9, 2007) – Two Franklin Pierce University student-athletes collected weekly honors from the Northeast-10 Conference on Tuesday. Freshman Chelsie Kohout (Harrison Township, Mich./L’Anse Creuse) collected Libero of the Week honors for volleyball, while Johan Torstensson (Falkoping, Sweden) earned Freshman of the Week accolades for men’s soccer. Kohout earns her second Libero of the Week honor of the season from the NE-10 after averaging 4.94 digs per game Franklin Pierce took three out of four matches last week. She opened the week with a season-high two kills to go with eight digs in the Ravens 3-0 win over UMass Lowell on Tuesday. Kohout helped the Ravens post a 3-0 win over the College of Saint Rose on Saturday with 14 digs and a kill. She averaged 5.70 digs per game in matches against Le Moyne College (3-2 win) and the University of Bridgeport (3-2 loss) on Sunday afternoon. Kohout registered a 32-dig effort in a five-game match against Bridgeport after collecting 25 digs against the Dolphins. Kohout ranks fifth in the Northeast-10 and second among Conference freshmen with 4.59 digs per game in her first collegiate season. She also ranks third in the NE-10 in total digs with 390. The Franklin Pierce volleyball team (13-11, 7-2 NE-10) sits in third place in the Northeast-10 heading into tonight’s key match at Merrimack College at 7 p.m. The contest kicks off an eight-match road trip for the Ravens, who will return home for their 2007 regular-season finale on Oct. 30 against American International College.
Torstensson collects his first NE-10 Freshman of the Week award after dishing two assists in Franklin Pierce’s 6-3 win at Saint Anselm College on Saturday to cap a 1-0-1 week. He set up the Ravens equalizing goal in the 20th minute after the team fell behind less than a minute into the match before reeling off six-straight goals to take control of the contest. He also posted an assist on Franklin Pierce’s third goal of the match against the Hawks. Torstensson has started all 11 matches played for Franklin Pierce in his first season, contributing two goals and two assists for six points. He netted the match-winning goal in the Ravens' 5-1 victory over Stonehill College on September 29. The Franklin Pierce men’s soccer team (9-1-2, 8-0-1 NE-10), ranked eighth in this week’s National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll and first in the New England Region, is back in action tomorrow night with a key NE-10 match at Merrimack, ranked fourth in the region, at 7 p.m. The Ravens are currently unbeaten over their last 11 matches (9-0-2) since opening the season with a 2-1 setback to Bridgeport on August 24. |
