Thorpe makes three saves to preserve school-record 28th career shutout

LOWELL, Mass. (September 9, 2006) – Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 1 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll for the first time in program history, and No. 25 University of Massachusetts Lowell played to a 0-0 draw in the Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer opener for both at Cushing Field this afternoon.

Franklin Pierce junior All-America goalkeeper James Thorpe (East Longmeadow, Mass./Bridgton Academy) made three saves (including two in the first half) to preserve his 28th career shutout and break the program record set by Ravens Hall of Famer Steve Quinones (1988-90). For his efforts, Thorpe was awarded the Jeff Burstein Man-of-the-Match by Ravens head coach Marco Koolman. The award is given to Franklin Pierce’s top player in its annual regular season match with UMass Lowell in memory of the 1998 Walter Peterson Male Student-Athlete of the Year who perished in an automobile accident near his hometown of Beachwood, N.J., on July 26, 2001. The former Ravens goalkeeper and standout baseball player served as an assistant coach at UMass Lowell for two years after graduating from Franklin Pierce.

Freshman Ryan Richards (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) made five saves to preserve his first career shutout for UMass Lowell, which finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots (8-6 after halftime).

UMass Lowell had perhaps its best chance late in the second overtime, but senior Andrew Doherty’s (Malden, Mass./Malden Catholic) header deflected right into Thorpe’s grasp in the 108th minute. Franklin Pierce quickly countered, but sophomore Tim Pacheco’s (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) shot was easily collected by Richards.

The Ravens also threatened late in the first extra session, but sophomore Marek Hawrylik’s (Olsztyn, Poland/The Winchendon (Mass.) School) header went straight into the hands of Richards.

Franklin Pierce (4-0-1, 0-0-1 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Assumption College for an NE-10 contest at 7 p.m. UMass Lowell (2-1-1, 0-0-1 NE-10) visits Bryant University on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
