Saint
Michael’s Stuns #1 Franklin Pierce, 1-0
Purple
Knights score midway through first half,
hold on the rest of the way for victory
COLCHESTER,
Vt. (October 14, 2006) – Franklin
Pierce, ranked No. 1 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, saw its
18-match regular season Conference unbeaten streak halted with a 1-0
setback at Saint Michael’s College in Northeast-10 men’s soccer
action at Duffy Field this afternoon.
Saint Michael’s senior Glenn
Sherman (Arlington, Vt./Arlington Memorial)
netted the match’s lone goal when he headed in a corner kick from
grad student Sam
Piotrowski (Colchester, Vt./Colchester)
in the 26th minute.
Freshman Jason
Burnett (South Burlington, Vt./IMG Academy)
made six saves to preserve his third shutout in as many starts this
season for the Purple Knights. Freshman Alec
Cambio (Scituate, R.I./Providence Country Day)
made one stop in his second-straight start for Franklin Pierce in
goal.
Franklin Pierce dominated the match, finishing with a 14-3
advantage in shots, including 5-0 in the second half, but could never
find that final touch to net the equalizer. The Ravens saw their
14-match unbeaten run to start the season come to an end as well as an
18-match NE-10 regular season unbeaten run dating back to a 1-0 loss
at Southern New Hampshire University on September 28, 2005.
Sherman’s goal was just the second allowed by Franklin Pierce
in NE-10 play this season (fifth overall) and ended a streak of
five-straight shutouts and a scoreless minute streak of 530:26.
Franklin Pierce (13-1-1, 9-1-1 NE-10) is back in action on
Tuesday when it visits 13th-ranked Southern Connecticut
State University in a match that will likely decide the NE-10 regular
season crown at 7 p.m. Saint Michael’s (9-4-3, 5-4-2 NE-10) visits
the College of Saint Rose on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
