Ettienne nets winner again as Ravens take
NCAA Tournament rematch

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (August 27, 2006) – Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 2 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II preseason poll, downed 11th-ranked Dominican College, 1-0, in a rematch of the 2005 NCAA Division II Northeast Regional final, on day two of the 2006 Southern Connecticut State University Autumn Classic at Jess Dow Field today.

            Senior back Bisharra Ettienne (Rosedale, N.Y./Dominica State College) was again the hero for Franklin Pierce, netting the only goal of the match off a feed from junior Brendan McMahon (Chapelhall, Scotland) 9:27 into the second half.            


Junior All-American James Thorpe made six saves in posting his 26th career shutout - just one shy of the school-record.

Franklin Pierce also won the previous encounter between the two programs, taking a 1-0 decision in overtime in the NCAA Northeast Regional final last fall on a penalty kick from NSCAA/adidas Division II Player of the Year Christopher Joyce.

            Junior All-American James Thorpe (East Longmeadow, Mass./Bridgton Academy) made six saves to preserve the victory and his first shutout of the season. Thorpe’s 26 career clean sheets are just one shy of the school-record set by Franklin Pierce Hall of Famer Steve Quinones.

Thorpe stopped  a penalty kick by Dominican junior Ryan Clancy (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) just five minutes before Ettienne's deciding goal.

            Senior Robert Kelly (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) made four saves for Dominican, who finished with a 10-9 advantage in shots for the match.

            Ettienne also netted the deciding goal with 5:03 remaining in regulation in the Ravens season-opening 2-1 victory over the University of Bridgeport here on Friday evening.

            Franklin Pierce (2-0) is back in action on Thursday night when it hosts Caldwell College on day one of the Franklin Pierce Labor Day Classic at 7 p.m. University of Bridgeport and Nyack College will play the first match on Sodexho Field at 4:30 p.m. Dominican (0-1-1) visits the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
