with 27th career shutout

RINDGE, N.H. (August 31, 2006) – Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 2 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II preseason poll, edged Caldwell College, 1-0, in day one action of the 2006 Franklin Pierce Labor Day Classic at Sodexho Field tonight.

Junior All-America goalkeeper James Thorpe (East Longmeadow, Mass./Bridgton Academy) made a first-half save to preserve his 27th career shutout (second of the season), matching the program record set by Franklin Pierce Hall of Famer Steve Quinones from 1988-1990. Thorpe’s lone stop came 12 minutes into the match when he was called on to deflect a blast from just inside the penalty area by Caldwell sophomore Asgeir Ofstad (Trondheim, Norway) that was ticketed for the top shelf.

Sophomore Raphael Guimaraes' second goal of the season was enough as he broke the deadlock in the 78th minute.

After being held without a shot in the first half, the Ravens looked much better over the final 45-minutes and opened the scoring in the 78th minute. Sophomore Raphael Guimaraes (Marlborough, Mass./Ashland) knocked in a loose ball on the far post, off a sharp cross from the right side by senior Jason Grier (Norwell, Mass./Norwell), for his second marker of the season.

Franklin Pierce finished with an 11-4 advantage in shots for the match, including 11-1 over the second half.

Caldwell sophomore goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) finished with three saves on the night (all second half).

Franklin Pierce (3-0) will face Nyack College (1-2) on day two of the Labor Day Classic on Saturday at 7 p.m. Nyack topped the University of Bridgeport (0-3), 2-1, in double-overtime in today’s opening match. Caldwell (0-1) and Bridgeport will square off on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
