Joyce plays role in both goals
as Ravens end two-match winless streak

RINDGE, N.H. (October 1, 2005) – Franklin Pierce, ranked fifth in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas New England Regional poll, ended a two-match winless streak with a 2-0 decision over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer action at Sodexho Field tonight.

All-America forward Christopher Joyce (Jarrow, England) played a role in both Franklin Pierce markers with a goal and assist, while the Ravens defensive unit held Stonehill without a shot in the match. The Ravens finished with 23 shots on the night, including 12 on target.

Joyce netted the only goal Franklin Pierce would need with 5:29 remaining in the first half. Freshman Raphael Guimaraes (Marlboro, Mass./Ashland) had a shot deflected by a Stonehill back before Joyce settled and fired a shot that Skyhawk senior goalkeeper Chad Etting (Plymouth, Conn./Holy Cross) stopped, but could not contain, allowing the goal to bounce into the right corner of the net at 39:31.

Freshman Marek Hawrylik netted his second goal of the season to ice the match.

Etting kept Stonehill in the match, making nine saves on the night, including a pair in the opening ten minutes off point-blank Franklin Pierce headers. Senior back Jonathan Casey (Lynn, Mass./St. John’s Prep) also cleared a Ravens header off the line in the 22nd minute to kept the match scoreless.

Franklin Pierce iced the match in the 76th minute as freshman Marek Hawrylik (Olsztyn, Poland/The Winchendon (Mass.) School) settled a cross from Joyce on the left side, and fired the ball past Etting from 25-yards out.

Sophomore goalkeeper James Thorpe (East Longmeadow, Mass./Bridgton Academy) posted his fifth save of the season (19th career) for the Ravens while not facing a shot.

Franklin Pierce (6-4-2, 4-1-1 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Le Moyne College, ranked fourth in the region at 3:30 p.m. Stonehill (3-6-1, 2-4-0 NE-10) hosts Bryant University Tuesday at 4 p.m.
