NEW
HAVEN, Conn. (August 28, 2005) –
East Stroudsburg University made the most of its scoring opportunities
in posting a 3-0 victory over Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 9 in the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division
II Coaches poll, on day two of the 2005 Reebok/Howard Johnson Hotels
Autumn Classic at Jess Dow Field on the campus of Southern Connecticut
State University today.
East Stroudsburg registered the early season upset despite
getting out-shot 14-5 by Franklin Pierce for the match. ESU senior Bill
Sterner (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) made three saves to
preserve the shutout in goal.
Senior Roy Thompson (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica)
netted the only goal the Warriors would need, with a direct kick in
the 38th minute, giving his side a 1-0 lead at the break.
ESU added a pair of insurance markers in the second half. Senior Joe
Alcaro (Newton, N.J./Newton) took a pass from Charlie
Brostowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Copaige) and converted from
close range in the 62nd minute. The Warriors added a third
marker just 1:40 later when freshman Roshane Ellison (East
Stroudsburg, Pa./Notre Dame) netted an unassisted goal at
63:10.
Sophomore James Thorpe (East Longmeadow, Mass./Bridgton
Academy) collected just one stop in net for Franklin Pierce,
which saw a four-match unbeaten streak at SCSU’s Jess Dow Field
halted.
Franklin Pierce (1-1) is back in action on Friday for day one
of its Labor Day Classic at Sodexho Field. The Ravens will host Barry
University at 7:30 p.m., after Bridgeport faces Dominican University
at 4 p.m. Bridgeport upset No. 7 Southern Connecticut State, 2-1, in
today’s second match at the Autumn Classic. East Stroudsburg (2-0)
visits Kutztown University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
