Kyle
Clancy double lifts Chargers to victory
RINDGE,
N.H. (September 4, 2005) –
Two goals in the span of nine minutes midway through the second half
lifted Dominican College to a 3-1 victory over Franklin Pierce, ranked
No. 9 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas
Division II preseason coaches poll, on day two of the Franklin Pierce
Labor Day Classic at Sodexho Field this afternoon.
Senior Kyle Clancy (Walden, N.Y./Pine Bush)
scored two goals, including the match-winner in the 60th
minute, to lead Dominican to its second-straight victory. Clancy
opened the scoring 10:04 into the match when he pounced on a Franklin
Pierce turnover in the penalty area and poked a shot into an open net
just moments after the Ravens narrowly had a bid for an opening goal
denied by Chargers sophomore goalkeeper Robert Kelly (Kearny,
N.J./Kearny).
Franklin Pierce All-American Christopher Joyce (Jarrow,
England) unleashed a blast from the top of the box that Kelly
got just enough of to take some the steam off it. The ball still
bounced and caromed off the cross bar before the Dominican defense
could clear, setting up the counter attack which resulted in
Clancy’s goal.
The Ravens equalized in the 35th minute when Joyce
steered a near post header past Kelly off a corner kick by sophomore Brandon
McMahon (Chapelhall, Scotland).
Franklin
Pierce out-shot the Chargers 8-2 in the first half (14-6 for the
match), but Dominican put together good some good possession in the
second. Clancy, and brother Ryan Clancy (Walden, N.Y./Pine Bush)
took advantage of another Franklin Pierce turnover just shy of the
hour mark for the go-ahead goal. Ryan sent Kyle in on a break with a
well-timed through ball, which he slotted into the right side at
59:45.
Dominican
got an important insurance marker in the 69th minute when
sophomore Jhonny Arteaga’s (Stamford, Conn./Westhill)
through ball sent classmate Diego Miranda (Quito, Ecuador)
in on a one-on-one break with the goalkeeper. Miranda fired a low shot
into the lower right corner at 68:28.
Kelly
preserved the win for Dominican with four saves, while sophomore Daniel
Hansen (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) made two stops in
his collegiate debut for Franklin Pierce.
Franklin Pierce (1-3) is back in action on Thursday when it
visits Caldwell College at 4 p.m. Dominican (3-1) hosts Bloomfield
College next Saturday at 2 p.m.
