Joyce nets double, while McColl dishes 
two assists to lead Ravens attack

RINDGE, N.H. (September 5, 2004) – Franklin Pierce, ranked No. 19 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II preseason poll, rebounded from Friday’s disappointing 2-1 loss with a 5-0 victory over Caldwell College in non-conference men’s soccer action at Franklin Pierce this afternoon.

            Grad student Christopher Joyce (Jarrow, England) netted a pair of goals, while senior Troy McColl (Sydney, Australia) dished two assists and grad students Craig Stewart (Newcastle Upon Tyne, England) and Tom McNeil (Paisley, Scotland) each finished with a goal and assist for Franklin Pierce.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring just seven minutes into the match as sophomore Andre Elphic (Queens, N.Y./Springfield Gardens) netted the first goal of his career when he headed in a free kick from McColl at the far post.

            Joyce gave the Ravens a 2-0 lead just before halftime as Stewart sent him in on a breakaway with a through ball at 36:51. Joyce opened the scoring in the second half with a header off a serve from senior Kyle Miller (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) in the 53rd minute.

            McColl set up McNeil’s marker with a serve over the top of the Caldwell defense that sent McNeil in one-on-one with junior goalkeeper Mike Turdo (West Paterson,

N.J./Passaic Valley) for a goal in the 68th minute. Stewart rounded out the scoring in the 78th minute when he headed in a McNeil free kick at the far post.

            Franklin Pierce freshman James Thorpe (East Longmeadow, Mass./Bridgton Academy) and sophomore Joseph Luginsland (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) combined for the shutout in goal. Thorpe collected two saves in nearly 76 minutes of action, while Luginsland did not register a save in 14 minutes.

            Turdo posted four saves in 90 minutes of work for the Cougars.

            Franklin Pierce (3-1) opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule on Wednesday with a big match up with Granite State rivals Southern New Hampshire University at 3:30 p.m. Caldwell (1-1) visits Bloomfield College Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
