Bakker’s second-half penalty kick gains Ravens
draw with Flyers

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (August 30, 2003) – Franklin Pierce got a penalty kick goal midway through the second half and then played through two scoreless overtime periods to claim a 1-1 draw with Lewis (Ill.) University, ranked No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Division II Preseason Poll, in day two action at the Reebok/Howard Johnson Hotels Autumn Classic, hosted by Southern Connecticut State University, at Jess Dow Field this evening.

Sophomore Lars Bakker (Enschede, The Netherlands) converted a penalty kick at the 64:07-mark after being tripped in the box by a Lewis defender. The marker was Bakker’s second in as many games at the two-day event.

The penalty drew the Ravens even after the Flyers had opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Sophomore Tito Lara (Shorewood, Ill./Joliet Central) headed in a cross from freshman Cathal Brady (Dublin, Ireland) past Franklin Pierce freshman goalkeeper Joseph Luginsland (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard).

FreshmanJoseph Luginsland made
three saves against Lewis Saturday
afternoon.

Luginsland, making his first career start after entering last night’s game against the University of Bridgeport in the 36th minute, settled down from there and posted three saves to allow the Ravens a shot at drawing level.

Junior Jordan Gustman (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) registered five stops for Lewis as it was on the short end of a 12-6 shots advantage for Franklin Pierce. The Flyers played to a pair of ties at the Classic as it also played to a 1-1 final with No. 4-ranked Southern Connecticut State last night.

Franklin Pierce (0-1-1) returns to action on Saturday, September 6, when it opens the Northeast-10 Conference season with a match against Saint Michael’s College on Crystal Field at 2 p.m. Lewis (0-0-2) visits Truman State University next Saturday at noon.
