in the final minute
NEW
HAVEN, Conn. (August 29, 2003) – After a late flurry in the
closing minutes to force overtime, Franklin Pierce fell to the
University of Bridgeport, 4-3, in double-overtime in game one action
of the Quality Inn Autumn Invitational, hosted by Southern Connecticut
State University, at Jess Dow Field this evening.
Senior Lee Sharkey (Glasgow, Scotland) came off
the bench and scored a pair of goals for Bridgeport, including the
match-winner with just 24-seconds left on the clock in the second
overtime. Sharkey had given the Purple Knights a 3-1 advantage with
10:08 remaining in regulation.
However, Franklin Pierce forced overtime with a pair of strikes
within a 77-second span in the final 2:46 of regulation. Sophomore Lars
Bakker (Enschede, The Netherlands) netted his first career
goal at the 87:14-mark, assisted by classmate Andre Elphic
(Springfield Gardens, N.Y./Springfield Gardens). Junior Mark
Jansen (Enschede, The Netherlands) drew the Ravens level at
the 88:31-mark, assisted by classmate Kenneth Reid (Sarpsborg,
Norway).
Reid had given Franklin Pierce an early lead when he placed a
low shot into the net in the 12th minute off a cross from
senior Felix Brillant (Montreal, Quebec/College Francais)
that was tipped by grad student Craig Stewart (Newcastle,
England).
Bridgeport evened the match just under ten minutes before
halftime with an unassisted goal from sophomore John Ruddock
(Liverpool, England). The Purple Knights took their first lead
at the hour-mark as senior Cheikh Diop (Senegal, West Africa) headed
in a throw in from senior Miguel Veizaga (Miami Springs,
Fla./Columbus).
Freshman Javier Decima (Jackson Heights, N.Y./Ulster CC)
earned the win in goal for Bridgeport with six saves in 110 minutes.
Senior Domenico Roma (Windsor, Ontario/Ste. Annes)
registered one save in 36 minutes of action before giving way to
freshman Joseph Luginsland (Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) who
made four stops and yielded all four goals. The Ravens out-shot the
Purple Knights by a 16-13 margin for the match.
Franklin Pierce (0-1) and Bridgeport (1-0) return to action
tomorrow for the final day of the 2003 SCSU/Quality Inn Autumn
Invitational. The Ravens will face No. 10-ranked Lewis (Ill.)
University at 4:30 p.m., while the Purple Knights face No. 4 Southern
Connecticut State University at 7 p.m.
