FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (September 14, 2003) – Lynn University, ranked No. 1 in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II poll, used four second-half goals to break open a 1-0 halftime advantage and defeat Franklin Pierce, 5-1, in day two action of the Holiday Inn Invitational hosted by Nova Southeastern University this afternoon.

Lynn wore down a Franklin Pierce team; already playing a man down after senior Sean McCabe (Derry City, Northern Ireland) was issued a red card in the 29th minute, in the mid-day South Florida heat. Seniors Garthfield Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica) and Mark Melling (Preston, England) each tallied a goal and an assist in the Knights second-half flurry.

Lynn took an early lead in the contest when junior Jared Montz (Mandeville, La./Mandeville) slid a cross from sophomore Christopher Knox (Newcastle, England) just 13:50 into the match.

After going a man-down, the Ravens kept the match within reach but Lynn netted three goals in a 17-minute span to break things open. Whyte set up sophomore Andrew Hirst (Throckley, England) with a ball over the top of the Franklin Pierce defense in the 59th minute. Whyte then scored a goal of his own, assisted by Melling at the 67:59-mark. Freshman Carl Wallace (Stafford, England) wrapped up the three-goal flurry with an unassisted tally in the 76th minute.

Franklin Pierce got a goal back when sophomore Lars Bakker (Enschede, The Netherlands) scored off a pass from senior Felix Brillant (Montreal, Quebec/College Francais) at 83:59. The goal was Bakker’s team-leading sixth strike of the season, while the assist marked Brillant’s first point of the year.

Melling rounded out the scoring with an unassisted tally with just 57-seconds remaining in regulation. Lynn recorded an overwhelming 25-5 shots advantage for the match and were whistled whistled offside 12 times.

Franklin Pierce (2-3-1, 2-0 NE-10) returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday when it visits College of Saint Rose at 4 p.m. Lynn (6-0) hosts Christian Brothers University on Thursday at 2 p.m.
