Senior captain Tate Travis netted FPC's first goal of the game vs. Dowling this afternoon

#5 Dowling Holds Back Franklin Pierce, 3-2

RINDGE, N.H. (August 31, 2002) - Dowling College, ranked No. 5 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II Preseason Coaches poll, used a three-goal flurry to erase an early 1-0 deficit and post a 3-2 victory over Franklin Pierce University
in men’s soccer action at Crystal Field this afternoon.

Franklin Pierce struck early as senior tri-captain Tate Travis (Detroit, Mich./UC Santa Barbara) converted a serve from fellow captain Chris Schwarz (Babenhausen, Germany) just 3:14 into the match.

Dowling got the equalizer in the 25th minute as junior Jose Danilo Vittorato converted a free kick just outside the top of the penalty box.

The Golden Lions netted a pair of goals in a six-minute span in the second half to open a 3-1 advantage. Senior Hamilton Merilus took a through ball from junior Vidar Magne Ekehaug and scored at the 53:40 mark, then Vittarato scored his second goal of the match as he flicked junior Lauro Maia’s free-kick into the net.

The Ravens mounted a comeback effort late in the match as Travis netted his second goal of the day. Junior Frank Ressel (Eschborn, Germany) set up the play with a nice tackle and then a through ball to a wide-open Travis.

Ressel nearly knotted the match with under 20-seconds to play but his header on a Felix Brillant (Montreal, Quebec) corner kick just missed over the cross bar.

Neither goalkeeper in the match registered a save as Franklin Pierce recorded a 7-4 shots advantage as well as a 9-1 margin on corner kicks. The match was marred by 56 fouls and ten yellow cards.

Franklin Pierce (0-1) returns to action on Monday when it hosts Gannon University at 1 p.m. Dowling (1-0) faces Saint Anselm College on Monday.
