Tops Saint Rose, 2-0
Thorpe makes three crucial saves as Ravens complete first unbeaten
conference regular season since 1995
RINDGE, N.H. (October
20, 2007) –
Franklin
Pierce University, ranked sixth in this week’s National Soccer
Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II coaches’
poll, completed its first unbeaten conference regular season in 12
years with a 2-0 victory at The College of Saint Rose in
Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer action at The Albany Academy
for Boys this afternoon.
Franklin Pierce
(12-1-3, 11-0-2 NE-10) wraps up just its third unbeaten regular
season run through conference play in program history – and first
since posting a 9-0-1 mark in the New England Collegiate Conference
in 1995. The Ravens will open defense of its NE-10 Tournament title
and will open postseason play as the top seed when it hosts an NE-10
Tournament Quarterfinal match next Sunday, October 28, (Time TBA).
Their opponent is far from determined with key matches still to play
tonight and on the final day of the NE-10 regular season next week.
Saint Rose (1-14-1, 1-10-1 NE-10) concludes its season on Thursday
at Saint Michael’s College at 3 p.m.

Franklin Pierce scored
two goals in a two-minute span late in the match to pull out the
victory. Senior All-America goalkeeper
James Thorpe (East
Longmeadow, Mass./Bridgton Academy)
made three crucial saves to preserve his ninth shutout of the season
(46th career) for the Ravens. Senior
Patrick Whalen
(Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley)
made nine stops in goal for Saint Rose.
Sophomore
Henning Comé
(Gothenburg, Sweden)
got Franklin Pierce on the board in the 79th minute with
his 13th goal of the season. He took a pass from senior
Mike Lima
(Ludlow, Mass./Ludlow)
and slotted a shot past Whalen. Junior
Marek Hawrylik
(Olsztyn, Poland/The Winchendon (Mass.) School)
sealed the victory when he converted a penalty kick in the 81st
minute after Comé was tripped up inside the 18.
The goals came just
moments after Thorpe came up with two vital saves to keep the match
scoreless. The first came off a drive from eight yards out by
senior Todd
Driscoll (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy)
in the 60th minute. Thorpe was forced to dive high and to
his left to stop a free kick from 30-yards out by
sophomore Justin Paden
(Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay).
