RINDGE, N.H.
(September 1, 2007) –
The men’s
soccer teams of Caldwell College and the University of Bridgeport
battled to a scoreless draw this afternoon at Sodexho Field in the
final day of the 2007 Franklin Pierce Labor Day Classic.
The match
was evenly played throughout, as neither team gained much of an
advantage. Bridgeport held a slight advantage in overall shots,
10-7, and shots on goal, 5-2.
Both teams
had chances to end the match late in the second overtime period.
Bridgeport’s
Gilbert Bayonne (Amityville, N.Y./St. John the
Baptist)
nearly ended the match with 7:17 remaining in the final period, as
his shot from just inside the box nearly missed the left post.
Exactly two minutes later, Caldwell’s
Chad
Bennett (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion)
took a shot from 30 yards out that barely missed the top right-hand
corner of the net. Neither team, however, could find the net for the
full 110 minutes.
Caldwell’s
John Plaugic (Kearny, N.J./Kearny)
made five saves for his fifth career shutout and first of the 2007
season.
Ryan
Brooks-Newton (Selkirk, N.Y./Herkimer CC)
made two saves for the Purple Knights to earn his first collegiate
shutout.
Bridgeport
(1-2-1) returns to action on Thursday against American International
in Springfield, Mass., while Caldwell (0-0-1) will battle Saint
Anselm in Manchester, N.H. tomorrow.
