Thorpe notches 40th career shutout
as Ravens now unbeaten in last six

RINDGE, N.H. (September 19, 2007) – Franklin Pierce University, ranked fifth in this week’s National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas New England Regional poll, ran its unbeaten run to six-straight and remained perfect in Conference play with a 2-0 victory over Bentley College in Northeast-10 men’s soccer action at Sodexho Field tonight.

The was the 100th at Franklin Pierce for Head Coach Marco Koolman, who has now posted a 100-36-16 (.711) mark in eight seasons at the Ravens helm. Koolman has posted a 174-65-22 (.709) career record, which includes his six seasons at Gannon University in the early to mid-1990's, and he ranks 14th among active Division II coaches for winning percentage.

Senior All-America goalkeeper James Thorpe (East Longmeadow, Mass./Bridgton Academy) notched his 40th career shutout (third of the season) – extending both his Northeast-10 and program records – making one save to preserve the clean sheet. Franklin Pierce enjoyed a 12-2 advantage in shots for the match; with Bentley freshman goalkeeper Michael Nikiforov (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) making four saves.

Junior Marek Hawrylik collected a goal for the Ravens.

Franklin Pierce was spotted a 1-0 lead 12:32 into the match, when Bentley freshman Austin  Faroni (Granby, Conn./Granby) tried to clear a Ravens cross over the end line, but directed the ball into his own net with Nikiforov off his line.

Franklin Pierce got the insurance goal in the 62nd minute as junior Marek Hawrylik (Olsztyn, Poland/The Winchendon (Mass.) School) took a pass from senior captain Peter Petropanagos (Mississauga, Ontario/York University) and fired a low shot from 12-yards out into the right side of the net. The goal came moments after Hawrylik saw an attempt during a scramble inside the six cleared off the line by Bentley sophomore back Josh Trubow (Newton, Mass./Newton North).

Bentley nearly drew even less than five minutes after the own goal, but Thorpe charged off his line well to stop sophomore Jimmy Alexander (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) on a break in the 17th minute.

Franklin Pierce (5-1-1, 4-0-0 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Smithfield, R.I., to face Bryant University, ranked sixth in the region, at 2 p.m. The Ravens don’t return home until Saturday, September 29, when they host Stonehill College at 7 p.m.
