Franklin Pierce Rolls
Past Assumption, 4-1

Comé nets hat trick in opening 11-minutes
to spur Ravens to second-straight victory

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 12, 2007) – Franklin Pierce University, ranked fifth in this week’s National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas New England Regional poll, rode a hat trick by sophomore Henning Comé (Gothenburg, Sweden) in just the opening 11-minutes of the match to a 4-1 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer action at Multi-Sport Field.

Comé’s hat trick gave Franklin Pierce a 3-0 lead it would not relinquish just 10:53 into the match. Senior captain Michel Vitulano (Montreal, Quebec/College de Maisonneuve) dished two assists for the Ravens on the night, including the final marker of Comé’s hat trick.

Senior All-America goalkeeper James Thorpe (East Longmeadow, Mass./Bridgton Academy) made three saves to preserve the win for Franklin Pierce. Freshman Brandan Sullivan (Halesite, N.Y./Saint Dominic) made six saves in goal for Assumption.

Senior captain Michel Vitulano dished a pair of assists in the win.

Comé took just 76-seconds to open the scoring as he directed a rebound of his own shot which was initially cleared off the goal line by an Assumption defender. He netted his second at 8:49, again off a rebound, before completing his hat trick by directing a Vitulano free kick from the left side past Sullivan in the 11th minute.

Assumption pulled a goal back in the 31st minute as junior Paul Murphy (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) took a pass from the midfield by senior Joe Drain (Milton, Mass./Milton) and slipped a shot past Thorpe.

Franklin Pierce ended any thoughts of a comeback just over ten minutes into the second half off another Vitulano free kick. Grad student David Clifton (London, England), making his first appearance for the Ravens this season, collected the Vitulano service and slipped a shot through a defender’s legs at the goal line.

Franklin Pierce (3-1-1, 2-0-0 NE-10) returns home to host American International College, as part of Men’s Soccer Alumni Day at the University, on Saturday at 7 p.m. Assumption (1-6-1, 0-4-0 NE-10) travels to Saint Michael’s College on Saturday for a match at 2 p.m.
