Pace Surges Past Franklin Pierce, 14-5
Gregory records a game-high five points to lead the Setters

RINDGE, N.H. (April 18, 2008) Pace University outscored Franklin Pierce University by eight goals in the second half as the Setters earned a 14-5 victory in Northeast-10 Conference men’s lacrosse action on Friday night at Sodexho Field.

Senior Ryan Gregory (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) was one of three Setters to score three goals on the night, and also added two assists for a game-high five points. Classmate Justin Page (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and sophomore James Hammel (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) each registered three goals and also recorded one assist apiece for Pace.

Senior captain Luke Ferreira (Farmington, Maine/Mount Blue) was the team’s top scorer with two goals, and fellow senior captain Russell Hodson (Chilmark, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) scored once and added an assist. Sophomore Lucas Hamory (Canton, Mass./ Canton) and junior Jon Priest (Burlington, Mass./Landmark School) also scored for the Ravens.

Freshman Shea Campbell made 17 saves to keep the Ravens close against Pace.

The game was a close, low-scoring affair for the first 30 minutes of play, with neither team gaining an edge of more than two goals. After Hammel opened the scoring 2:54 in, Hamory and Ferreira scored 10 seconds apart while the Ravens were a man up to give the team an early 2-1 lead. Pace responded with three of the next four tallies to end the first quarter by scoring three times in the final 1:24, capped by a man-up goal from Hammel with two seconds remaining in the frame.

Each team scored once in the second quarter to send the teams into the intermission with the Setters up a tally at 5-4.

The tide turned dramatically in the second 30 minutes of play, however, as Pace outscored the Ravens, 9-1. The half began promisingly for Franklin Pierce, as Hodson notched his fifth goal of the season 2:34 into the third quarter to knot the game at five, but Pace scored the final nine goals of the game to secure the win. Gregory and sophomore Joe Page (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) scored back-to-back goals twice in the fourth quarter to end the run, scoring 36 seconds and 18 seconds apart in the final 4:37.

Pace held a decisive 31-14 edge in shots on goal on the evening. Junior Timothy Matheis (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) stopped nine shots to earn the win for the Setters, while freshman Shea Campbell (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) kept the Ravens in the game with an excellent effort, making 17 saves on 31 shots.
