Mooney leads all scorers with four goals on the afternoon

RINDGE, N.H. (April 27, 2008) Le Moyne College, top-ranked in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Div. II poll, defeated Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference men’s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Sodexho Field.

Junior Jack Mooney (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) doubled his season goal total with a game-high four goals for Le Moyne, and three other Dolphin players tallied two goals each. Freshman Jack Venditti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) added a goal and two assists while junior Tim Spillett (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) recorded a game-best three assists.

Three Ravens found the net on the afternoon, including second-half tallies by junior Jason Flanigan (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and sophomore Lucas Hamory (Canton, Mass./Canton). Senior captain Luke Ferreira (Farmington, Maine/Mount Blue) also found the net off a pass from fellow senior captain Matt Sampson (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) for the 76th goal of his career, the highest total in program history.

Le Moyne dominated play in the first quarter, scoring nine times without a Raven answer and holding an 11-0 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Nick Gatto (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) began the scoring 2:05 into the first quarter, and eight different Dolphins tallied a goal in the opening 15 minutes of play as the visitors took a 9-0 lead through one.

Senior captain Matt Sampson recorded his first point of the season in his final career game on Sunday against Le Moyne.

After Le Moyne scored the first three goals of the second quarter, Ferreira got the Ravens on the board with 32 seconds remaining in the half, taking a pass from Sampson and beating Le Moyne netminder Bay Stroker (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego). But freshman Mark Boller (Cary, N.C./Cary) came right back for Le Moyne, scoring with two seconds left to give the Dolphins a 13-1 lead at the half.

The Dolphins continued their offensive pressure in the second half of play, outscoring Franklin Pierce by a 7-2 margin despite holding only a slight 16-14 edge in shots. Mooney scored three of his four goals in the third quarter as Le Moyne extended its lead.

Three Le Moyne netminders combined to give up three goals, with junior starter Doug McIver (Altamont, N.Y./Albany Academy) getting credit for the win after playing a scoreless first period. Freshman goaltender Shea Campbell (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfields) made five saves in the first half for Franklin Pierce, while junior Ryan Hulse (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) stopped five shots in the second half.

Franklin Pierce completes its 2008 season with a 2-12 overall record and a 1-9 Northeast-10 mark. Le Moyne (13-0, 10-0 NE-10) will prepare for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament next weekend against either Saint Anselm College or Saint Michael’s College on Friday.
