#5 Bryant Rolls Past Franklin Pierce, 27-8
Kaspar and Kaufman lead Bulldogs to sixth victory of the season


Senior Nick Cowden led the Ravens with three goals and one assist against No. 5 ranked Bryant University.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (April 14, 2007) – The Franklin Pierce men’s lacrosse team suffered a tough 27-8 setback to No. 5 ranked Bryant University in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon. The Bulldogs gained a 12-2 lead at half time and never looked back to earn their sixth victory of the season.

Graduate Peter Kaspar (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) led the Bryant University attack with a game-high six points on four goals and two assists. Sophomore Bryan Kaufmann (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Mahopac) and junior Brent Stoothoff (West Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) were also solid, registering four goals and one assist each, while freshman Brian Giroux (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) collected five points on three goals and two assists. Senior Bryan Molk (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) and sophomore Matt McKeefrey (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) chipped in with four points apiece.

Senior Nick Cowden (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) was strong for Franklin Pierce, totaling a team-high four points on three goals and one assist. Classmate Michael Willis (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) collected three points on two goals and one assist, while sophomore Ryan Boller (New Cannan, Conn./New Cannan) added two scores.


Senior goaltender Ben Lek registered seven saves.

Bryant opened with six unanswered goals to start the first period as Kaufmann led the Bulldog attack with four scores. Franklin Pierce netted its first goal of the game late in the first period as Cowden deposited his sixth goal of the season off a helper from Willis.

In the second period, Bryant out-scored Franklin Pierce 6-1 to take a commanding 12-2 lead at the half. McKeefrey led the Bulldogs with two goals and one assist, while sophomore Kevin Hoagland (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) added two scores. Ryan Boller netted the lone goal for Franklin Pierce off a dish from junior Luke Ferreira (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue).

In the third frame, Bryant exploded for nine goals to take a 21-5 advantage. The Bulldogs opened the period with six unanswered goals before sophomore Jason Flanigan (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) broke the Franklin Pierce scoring silence with his 11th goal of the season at the 6:50 mark. Cowden sparked the Ravens moments later with a pair of goals in a 0:47 span, but the Bulldogs rallied for three goals late in the period to maintain their advantage.

Franklin Pierce came out firing in the fourth period with two quick scores by Boller and Willis, but the Bryant attack pieced together a six goal scoring surge over the final 10:08 of play to preserve its victory.

Bryant out-shot Franklin Pierce 58 to 30 in the contest. Senior Ben Lek (Gaithersburg, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) stopped seven shots in net for the Ravens, while junior Michael Kennedy (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) collected seven saves for the Bulldogs..

Franklin Pierce (3-7, 0-6 NE-10) will be in action again on Tuesday as it hosts Merrimack College at 6 p.m. Bryant University (6-2, 5-0 NE-10) will travel to Merrimack College tomorrow at 2 p.m.
