Franklin Pierce
Edged By RINDGE, N.H. (April 1, 2006) – The Franklin Pierce men’s lacrosse team was edged by Southern New Hampshire University, 14-12, in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at Sodexho Field. Penmen juniors Jon Habel (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and Joe Young (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy), as well as sophomore John Delanoy (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) all contributed a game-high five points, on three goals and two assists each. Southern New Hampshire opened the match with an early 6-0 lead in the first period behind the hot shooting of Young, Habel and Delanoy. The trio combined for four of the Penmen’s six goals in the period, while sophomore Chris Dindler (Stepheny, Austria) and senior Ryan Deal (Waterbury Center, Vt./Harwood Union) each chipped in with one goal each.
Franklin Pierce rallied back in the second period, scoring three times while shutting out Southern New Hampshire to cut the deficit to 6-3. Franklin Pierce senior captain Nick Cowden (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) started the second period explosion for the Ravens, while freshman Conor McCullough (Dover, N.H.) and junior Michael Willis (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) followed with one goal apiece. In the third period, Franklin Pierce brought the Southern New Hampshire lead to within two as the Ravens notched five goals in the period. Freshman Ryan Boller (New Cannan, Conn./New Cannan) found the back of the net twice to lead the charge, while Willis and McCullough each registered their second goals of the game. Sophomore Luke Ferreira (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) also netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season to cut the Penmen lead to 10-8 heading into the fourth frame. During the fourth period, Franklin Pierce inched within one goal as the Ravens posted three consecutive scores by freshman Kyle Kruse (Bourne, Mass./Bourne), classmate Jason Flanigan (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and Boller midway through the period. But, the Penmen answered with two goals over the last five minutes of play to secure their third victory of the season. Franklin Pierce was out-shot 51-27. Southern New Hampshire goalkeeper Bryan Romanow (Portland, Maine/Deering) registered his third win of the season while stopping three shots. Franklin Pierce goalkeeper Freeman Scott (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) made 17 saves despite the loss. Franklin Pierce (0-4, 0-3 NE-10) will be in action again on Monday as the Ravens host Assumption College at 7 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (3-2, 2-0 NE-10) will travel to Assumption College on Wednesday for a match starting at 7 p.m.
