Chadbourne David Chadbourne completed his ninth season as Head Men's Basketball Coach at Franklin Pierce in 2007-08. Chadbourne took over as the fifth coach in program history in May 1999. Chadbourne has a successful history at Franklin Pierce beyond his nine seasons as head coach of the men's basketball team. He returned to the men's program following a three-year head-coaching stint with the women's team, after five years as an assistant coach to former men's coach Art Luptowski, whom he replaced prior to the 1999-2000 season.
Chadbourne has overseen the Ravens transition into the highly competitive Northeast-10 Conference, posting a 104-120 (.444) record in eight seasons and leading the team to seven NE-10 Tournament berths. Chadbourne's eye for talent has been proven as he has produced six All-Northeast-10 picks, two Daktronics and two NABC All-Region selections and Donald Johnson was an NABC All-American in 2000-2001. Several of Chadbourne's recruits have made an immediate impact as nine different Raven newcomers have earned NE-10 Freshman of the Week honors a total of 19 weeks and four have earned NE-10 All-Rookie Team honors over the last five seasons. Chadbourne led the Ravens to a 17-11 record and third place in the New England Collegiate Conference in his first season at the helm. In 2000-2001, Franklin Pierce posted a 16-13 mark and sixth-place finish in its first season in the 15-team Northeast-10 Conference. The Ravens made a push in the postseason, advancing to the Conference semifinals after posting the program's first win ever at Saint Anselm College's Stoutenburgh Gymnasium, defeating the Hawks (ranked 14th in Division II at the time) 89-76 in the quarterfinal round. In 2001-02, Franklin Pierce earned a postseason berth, finishing in a three-way tie for seventh place in the Northeast-10. The Ravens posted a 15-12 record overall. The Ravens showed a knack for knocking off ranked opponents, opening the season with wins over two preseason Top 25 teams in winning the Clarion KFC/Subway Invitational.
In 2002-03, Franklin Pierce again reached the postseason and claimed an upset win at eighth-seeded Bryant College in the Northeast-10 Tournament first round before falling in the quarterfinal to a UMass Lowell team that went on to the Elite Eight. Raven junior Jimmie Hunt was named a second team Daktronics and NABC All-Northeast selection, marking Chadbourne's first men's head coaching recruit to earn All-Region status In 2003-04, the Ravens again made a trip to the NE-10 Tournament following a 14-14 campaign. For the first time, two Ravens earned All-Northeast-10 honors and a stocked recruiting class saw true freshman Darryl Minnifield pick up the first NE-10 All-Rookie team award in program history. During Chadbourne's five years as an assistant with the men's team, the Ravens made three trips to the NCAA Tournament and won the 1995-96 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) regular-season championship. In 1996-97, Chadbourne replaced Steve Hancock and helped the injury-plagued Franklin Pierce women's basketball team to a 17-11 clip. He then guided the Ravens to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a record of 46-13 during his final two seasons as coach.
Along the way, Chadbourne was named NECC Coach of the Year in 1998 as the Ravens posted a school-best 15-1 record in the Conference, claiming the regular-season title. Chadbourne has also coached several other teams at Franklin Pierce, serving as baseball coach in 1996 and 1998, softball coach in 1995, and the men's and women's tennis coach in 1993 and 1994. In 1993, he led the men's tennis team to the NECC title and a runner-up spot in 1994. Before joining the Franklin Pierce coaching staff in 1991, Chadbourne was an assistant basketball and baseball coach at his alma mater, St. Joseph's College, in Standish, Maine, for four years. A standout player for the Monks, Chadbourne established single-season and career school records in assists and ranks fifth on St. Joe's all-time scoring list. In his senior year, the Monks became the first team in New England to advance to the second round of the NAIA National Tournament. He led St. Joseph's to more than 100 wins in his playing career. Chadbourne was honored by his alma mater in the fall of 2001, when he was inducted into the Saint Joseph's College Athletics Hall of Fame. A native of Claremont, Calif., Chadbourne currently lives in Jaffrey, with his wife, Michele, and daughters Madison (12), Katherine Rose (10) and Grace (7). Chadbourne's Clip
