Ravens lead men’s and women’s basketball teams to four combined wins last week

RINDGE, N.H. (January 13, 2002) - Two Franklin Pierce basketball players earned Player of the Week accolades by the Northeast-10 Conference this afternoon.

Senior swing player Jennifer Webster (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) earned her third NE-10 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week selection of the season (fourth career), while junior guard Derek Rodgerson (Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy) picked up his first NE-10 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honor of the season (second career) as they led the Ravens teams to a combined 4-0 record last week.

Webster totaled a game-high 24 points, aided by a 9-10 effort at the line, nine rebounds and four steals to lead Franklin Pierce to a 72-61 win over Pace University, an NCAA Tournament team a year ago, on Wednesday. She followed that up with her third double-double of the season (seventh career) to help lead the Ravens to a 69-66 upset of Southern Connecticut State University, ranked seventh in the Northeast Region, on Saturday afternoon. She netted 19 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds on the afternoon to go along with two assists and two blocks.

Webster is also averaging 2.2 steals per game and shooting 42.5% (88-207) from the field, 76.5% (52-68) from the free-throw line this season.

Junior Derek Rodgerson was named Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week for the first time this season

Rodgerson earns his second career Player of the Week selection after averaging 24.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Raven men. He canned 62-percent (13-21) of his shots from the field for the week, including 7-11 (63.6%) from three-point range, and converted 84% (16-19) of his free-throw attempts.

Rodgerson started the week by netting a career-best 35 points on 9-12 shooting from the field (6-8 from three-point range) and 11-13 from the line to lead Franklin Pierce to a 76-71 win over Pace. He also chipped in five rebounds and two blocks in the victory and was particularly clutch down the stretch as he scored 18 of the Ravens 32 second half points to hold off a charging Pace team.

Rodgerson followed that performance up by leading a balanced Ravens offensive attack in Saturday’s 71-60 win over Southern Connecticut, totaling a team-best 14 points and grabbing six rebounds.

Rodgerson currently ranks second on the team (9th in the NE-10), averaging 15.9 points to along with 4.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.6 steals per game this season.
