Saint Anselm Edges Franklin Pierce, 77-67
Hawks Win First Home Game of Season

Manchester, N.H. (January 3, 2003) - Saint Anselm won its third straight game, and first home contest of the season with a 77-67 win over in-state rival Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 Conference game in Manchester, N.H.

Saint Anselm improves to 5-5 overall, 3-4 in the Northeast-10 while Franklin Pierce dips to 3-8 on the season, 1-5 in league play.

Saint Anselm led throughout the game and led by as much as 21 points on a trey by Matt Hendershot before a late Franklin Pierce comeback made the game close. FP
cut the lead to single digits with under three minutes in the game but would not seriously challenge as the Hawks avoided their first 0-4 home start since the 1982-83 season.

In the first half, FP
took 13 more shots than Saint Anselm but the Hawks enjoyed a 12-for-15 shooting display from the free throw line while FP
went 0-for-1. Each team made 16 free throws in the second stanza but the first half disparity seemed to be the difference. In all, FP
attempted 28 more shots than the Hawks (79-51). Saint Anselm shot 41 percent from the floor this season, marking just the fourth time this season the Hawks have cracked the .400 mark. The team is 4-0 in those games.

Freshman Matt Cahill led all scorers with 21 points in an impressive display. He shot 6-for-9 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the charity stripe in 28 minutes. Darlington Okerulu also had a solid showing as well with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Hendershot chipped in 13 points on 4-for-5 shooting.

Franklin Pierce was led by Sharod Campbell (Dorchester, Mass.) who had 16 points and 14 rebounds. He shot 7-for-11 from the floor but the rest of his teammates were cold as they shot a combined 16-for-68 (.235).

Saint Anselm returns to action on Sunday when the Hawks travel across the river to face in-city rival Southern New Hampshire in a 3:30 PM tipoff. Franklin Pierce also returns to action Sunday with the Ravens hitting the road for a 3:30 PM game at Saint Michael's.
