ALBANY, N.Y. (November
20, 2001) - Senior guard Jason Bariteau drained a 25-foot
runner at the buzzer to lead The College of Saint Rose to
an 87-85 victory over Franklin Pierce University
in the Northeast-10
Conference opener for both in men’s basketball action at
the Campus Activities Center tonight.
The buzzer-beater
capped a career night for Bariteau as he drained nine-of-19
shots from the field, including 5-9 from three-point range
to net a career-high 29 points.
Franklin Pierce, who
entered the game following a pair of wins over Top-25 opponents
over the weekend, seemed to have victory in hand as senior
V.J. Kwity (Torrance, Calif./West) tipped
in a missed three-pointer by sophomore Derek Rodgerson
(Newburgh, Maine/Hampden Academy) with two-seconds
left on the clock to give the Ravens a one-point lead. The
3-0 start would have marked the programs first since the
1994-95 season and oddly enough, Saint Rose handed the Ravens
their first loss (88-86) in game four.
Senior forward Kevin
Scott (Mississauga, Ontario/Iona Cartholic) led FP
with a season-high 27 points, on 13-20 shooting from
the floor, nine rebounds and three blocks. Sophomore Jimmie
Hunt (Utica, N.Y./Mount Ararat (Maine)) contributed
17 points, aided by a 3-5 effort from three-point range,
while Rodgerson chipped in 12 points and three assists.
Kwity finished with ten points, five rebounds and four assists
off the bench.
Franklin Pierce shot
54.5-percent (36-66) from the field, including a 60% (21-35)
effort in the second half alone, marking the third-straight
game the Ravens have shot over 50% from the field. FP
also
out-rebounded the taller Saint Rose squad by a 44-31 margin,
but 28 turnovers proved costly.
Junior Phil Sellers
added 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks for Saint
Rose, while freshman Adonist Barber chipped in ten points
in his collegiate debut.
FP
(2-1, 0-1 NE-10)
returns to action on Thursday, November 29, when it hosts
Southern Connecticut State University, in its home-opener
at 7 p.m. Saint Rose (1-0, 1-0 NE-10) travels to UMass Lowell
on Sunday, November 25, for a game at 4 p.m.
